Like several other Chinese EV producers, Xpeng is quickly entering one new market after another. Its latest market entrance is into Ireland. On Tuesday, the company noted, “XPENG strengthens its European commitment with an official entry into the Irish market, another key right-hand drive market.”
The first model available in Ireland is the G6, which is an “ultra smart coupe SUV.” Xpeng is partnering with Motor Distributors Limited (MDL) to import and sell the model, and future models, in Ireland. And, yes, the G6 is just the beginning. This will “mark the start of an ongoing rollout of XPENG models across Ireland,” the company writes. It doesn’t indicate which models will come next, but later notes that the G9 and P7 have also received Euro NCAP 5-star safety ratings.
Xpeng notes that the Irish EV market is growing quickly thanks to “government incentives, growing infrastructure, and rising demand for sustainable transportation.”
“Our partnership with MDL marks an important step in XPENG’s global expansion,” said Dr. Brian Gu, Vice Chairman and President of XPENG. “We are excited to introduce Irish consumers to a new standard in electric mobility, combining innovative technology with exceptional design to deliver an unparalleled experience that meets the demands of today’s drivers. With a vision for AI-defined mobility, we aim to revolutionize the driving experience in Ireland, making it safer, smarter, more sustainable and more pleasant in the near future.”
Xpeng first entered Europe through Norway, in 2020, and later brought EVs to Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, France, Iceland, Spain, and Portugal. As we can see, though, the geographic expansion goes on. Ireland won’t be the last European market Xpeng enters.
Globally, by the end of next year (2025), Xpeng plans to be selling its smart electric vehicles in 60 different markets (countries). The company also wants half of its sales to be coming from those foreign markets by then. Given that China is currently about half of the global EV market, that seems like a good target to pursue. We’ll see if Xpeng can achieve it.
