Whitehaven Coal has welcomed its 2024 cohort of graduates by holding a two-day event in Gunnedah, New South Wales.
Whitehaven’s graduate program is a two-year development program that was designed to grow and develop the company’s future heads.
Through the program, participants will gain practical skills and training from both on-the-job learning experiences and formal development sessions as they rotate through several of Whitehaven’s sites and offices.
The 2024 program welcomed 24 recent graduates at its introductory event, which covered Whitehaven’s values and operations. The graduates studied subjects such as engineering, operational technology, geology and the environment.
“We are thrilled to welcome our new cohort of graduates and provide them with a comprehensive introduction to the values and operations that define Whitehaven Coal,” Whitehaven graduate lead Susie Cooper said.
“Our two-day event not only equips our graduates with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed but also instils in them a deep appreciation for the communities and environments in which we operate.”
Day one of the event provided the graduates with an overview of Whitehaven’s history, core values, and key operational facets.
Day one also consisted of Whitehaven leaders giving presentations on different areas of company, including safety protocols, environmental stewardship, cultural heritage preservation, and the financial dynamics of the mining industry.
Day two of the event featured a workplace respect session and a presentation run by Whitehaven’s 2023 graduate cohort, where they shared their experiences and knowledge gained during their first-year undertaking Whitehaven’s graduate program.
The event also held a cultural heritage tour led by members of the Gomeroi Aboriginal People, where the graduates gained an understanding of the importance of land stewardship and cultural preservation.
Whitehaven has a strong presence in Gunnedah through its Gunnedah coal handling and preparation plant, which recently celebrated 4000 lost time incident free days.
