Volkswagen released worldwide sales data today. A decent portion of the news release, which admittedly was not very long, was about the brand’s EV business.

The company noted that it has delivered around 500,000 units of the ID.3 since it was released, a big event I recall Steve Hanley attended for CleanTechnica in Wolfsburg, Germany, in November 2019. I assume “around 500,000 units” must mean a bit less than 500,00 units. Half a million sales in approximately 5 years averages out to about 100,000 a year. It’s better than the vast majority of EV models have achieved, but I have to say that I expected more from the model in 2019. This is supposed to be a truly mass-market EV from one of the biggest auto brands in the world. Alright, it’s doing okay, which is why Volkswagen highlighted the model in this-end-of-year sales announcement. But we all want more, right?

Overally, Volkswagen sold 4.8 million vehicles in 2024. Since 2019 when the ID. family was launched, Volkswagen has sold 1.35 million ID. units.

Across all fully electric vehicle models, Volkswagen reached 383,100 sales in 2024. On the one hand, find me a legacy automaker doing better. On the other hand, that’s a small fraction of what BYD and Tesla are doing, and it’s barely more than several Chinese EV startups (NIO, XPENG, and Zeekr, to name a few).

Is Volkswagen doing well when it comes to electrification of its fleet? Or has the company dropped the ball? What’s your take? I can honestly say I’m a bit torn on the matter, given all the challenges and difficulties for a big legacy automaker trying to transition to an electric vehicle era.
