Volkswagen Getting Xpeng Turing Chips Next - CleanTechnica

I just reported on the Xpeng G7 launching in China. One element of the highly attractive and competitive looking G7 is that it uses Xpeng’s new Turing AI chip, moving on from Nvidia’s Orin X chip. According to the Financial Times, Xpeng founder, chairman, and CEO He Xiaopeng, Volkswagen will be using this new AI chip next.

Volkswagen is reportedly working on models, with Xpeng, that will launch next year and will use the Turing chip. Naturally, these will be models for the Chinese market.

It appears that this is one way Xpeng intends to expand its business and make money. The company is eager to have other partners come in and use its AI chip. I presume the company sees itself as a technology leader, sees how hard it is to scale up consumer demand in a new brand’s cars quickly, and figures it should lean into its technological expertise and capitalize on it in other ways as well.

“We are looking for long-term partners,” He said.

Back to Volkswagen, a company representative made this statement to the Financial Times in response to an inquiry about this: “As announced, Volkswagen and Xpeng are jointly developing two Volkswagen brand cars for the mid-class segment. Both parties contribute their respective strength. These cars will be launched next year.”

Volkswagen previously announced that it would invest a whopping $700 million into Xpeng. I don’t think a company like Volkswagen does that if it doesn’t see a clear strength in the startup, especially in the highly competitive auto market.
