WASHINGTON, DC — The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Electricity (OE) today announced a Request for Information (RFI) to guide future planning of OE’s Applied Grid Transformation Solutions (AGTS) program. Stakeholder input will help enhance the AGTS program goal of facilitating innovative grid technology adoption, which will extend the reliability, resilience, security, and affordability of the nation’s electricity delivery infrastructure.

Through the AGTS program, researchers put new grid technologies, such as energy storage systems and next-generation transmission and distribution (T&D) equipment, through stress tests and pilot demonstrations in different environments. The AGTS program also supports assessment of demonstration projects and documents best practices in grid transformation. These activities provide industry representatives with the data and insights they need to make informed decisions about deploying the technologies into power grid operations. The AGTS program aims to reduce the risks of these advanced grid solutions before they are deployed in the field and to advance grid technology R&D and innovation.

The RFI is seeking input related to AGTS program activities with an emphasis on domestic, publicly accessible facilities (“test beds”) that perform testing, evaluation, validation, and certification of T&D grid hardware and software technologies. Grid test beds are vital tools in technology development by evaluating a technology’s performance, safety, security, and reliability in a controlled and realistic environment before it is integrated with operational assets and systems. The AGTS program plans to use unique capabilities at U.S. facilities to provide industry representatives with a coordinated platform to support testing and validation of innovative grid technologies for different use cases.

Find more information here. Responses to this RFI must be submitted by February 28, 2025.
