There has been a lot of good EV charging news lately. Just about one month ago, it was announced that a little over 1,200 EV charging ports were installed in one project in British Columbia. On the West Coast of the US, the state of California has over 201,000 EV charging ports operating, and that total does not include all the home EV chargers. A little over 140 EV charging ports were installed in a single project in the San Francisco Bay Area at one condo complex.
Going back to Canada, it was recently announced that SureCharge Corp. will install up to 96 fast-charging EV ports in Alberta and British Columbia. The technology utilized in the new EV charging project will be Wallbox’s Supernova 180 kW chargers. (It should be noted that about 98% of British Columbia’s electricity comes from clean or renewable sources. The same is not true in Alberta where fossil fuels are dominant but renewables are growing.)
Representatives of SureCharge Corp. answered some questions for CleanTechnica about the new chargers.
How many new charging locations will there be, and where will they be?
We are currently deploying between 21 and 24 charging locations in Phase One, supported under NRCan’s ZEVIP program.
Phase One locations include (in no particular order):
- Alberta: Red Deer, Lacombe, Enoch/Edmonton (River Cree), Rocky Mountain House, Drayton Valley, Edson, Hinton, Jasper, Whitecourt, Grande Cache, Valleyview, Grande Prairie, Longview, Diamond Valley, DeWinton, Langdon, Provost
- British Columbia: Sparwood, Fernie, Fort Nelson, Fort. St John
Additional phases are already in the planning stages and may come sooner than expected. We are also open to new site host partners — interested parties can reach us directly at info@surecharge.ca.
What will the total number of EV charging ports installed be?
Each site will have either:
- 2 chargers (4 ports), or
- 4 chargers (8 ports).
In total, Phase One will deliver between 84 and 96 fast-charging ports.
What will the peak charging speeds be?
- Initial deployment: Up to 180 kW per port, or 90 kW per port in split mode when two vehicles are sharing one charger.
- Future upgrades: Certain high-demand sites are pre-wired and designed to scale up to 350 kW per port as utilization and vehicle demand increase.
Will they be compatible with all EVs?
Yes. All locations will feature CCS1 and NACS connectors, covering the vast majority of EVs on the market. Tesla drivers are fully welcome. The only exception will be older vehicles requiring CHAdeMO, which we will not be supporting at this stage.
How will EV drivers find the new chargers?
- Listings and updates will be available on www.surecharge.ca (including a mailing list for updates).
- Stations will appear on major apps like PlugShare and ChargeHub.
- Chargers will also be discoverable via the SureCharge web app (currently in development).
At this time we don’t plan to launch a standalone mobile app, as we want to make access simple and avoid app fatigue.
When will the new chargers be available and operational?
- First four sites (Red Deer – Alberta Sports Hall of Fame, Lacombe – Midway Esso, Enoch Nation – River Cree Resort, Rocky Mountain House) are targeted to be operational by December 2025.
- The full Phase One network will be open to the public by December 2026.
How will EV drivers pay for using the chargers?
We’re enabling seamless point-of-sale options:
- Tap-to-pay with credit/debit cards
- RFID
- Web app access
No account setup required.
Will the new EV charging locations be near amenities?
Yes. All our chargers are sited at or adjacent to restaurants (including Boston Pizza franchises), gas stations, community centers, and visitor centers. Every site provides access to restrooms, food, and areas to stretch or walk — a key part of ensuring drivers have a comfortable charging experience.
Alberta — and eastern British Columbia — have been underserved and largely ignored when it comes to EV charging infrastructure. Most large national competitors have focused their resources in Ontario, Western BC, and Quebec, leaving Albertans and regional travelers with limited fast-charging options. Our goal with SureCharge is to bridge that gap and provide broad coverage that helps connect Canada for EV drivers everywhere.
Phase One will deliver a broad coverage fast-charging network across Alberta and BC, with up to 96 ports at 21–24 locations, initially at 180 kW with room to scale to 350 kW. Our approach emphasizes driver convenience, easy payment, and reliable siting with amenities. Future phases are already being planned and will expand coverage even further.
