Unlocking WA’s new silica sand industry

VRX Silica’s Arrowsmith North silica sand project in Western Australia has the backing of the state’s Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), which recommends the project’s development move forward.

In its assessment report, the EPA recommended that the Arrowsmith North development be implemented subject to conditions.

VRX managing director Bruce Maluish said the recommendation marks a significant step forward in the environmental approvals process for Arrowsmith North.

“This is a significant milestone for the company, with the EPA recommending that the Arrowsmith North development proposal be implemented subject to conditions accepted by VRX following consultation with the EPA,” VRX managing director Bruce Maluish said.

“It’s the culmination of determined persistence by VRX and its consultants for the Arrowsmith North permitting process over a long period of time.”

The EPA’s assessment report also triggers a statutory three-week review period, during which appeals can be lodged.

Following this, an independent appeals convenor will resolve any disputes before the proposal is forwarded to WA Environment Minister Reece Whitby for consideration under Part IV of the Environmental Protection Act 1986.

VRX first announced the EPA’s acceptance of its response to submissions for Arrowsmith North on November 18 2024.

The assessment’s completion finalises the EPA’s recommendation to Whitby, bringing VRX closer to its goal of establishing a new industry in the mid-west region of WA, a leading mining district.

“The company is now on the cusp of opening up a new industry in the mid-west region of Western Australia, with employment and other long-term benefits flowing to the state,” Maluish said.

Subject to ministerial approval, VRX’s Arrowsmith North project is set to deliver significant economic benefits, including job creation and ongoing contributions to the local community.
