A new electric utility wagon, which claims a carrying capacity of up to 150 pounds and the ability to haul loads up inclines as steep as 17%, is also claimed to be “the safest electric wagon,” thanks to its active safety features, such as an electric braking system that activates automatically when going downhill. The Outisan e-Wagon Air touts a proprietary sensor system and control algorithm as part of its smart features, as well as its dual-motor design with a regenerative braking system.

There are plenty of outdoor adventures and family outings where an extra pair of hands or three would really come in handy when hauling ALL THE THINGS from the vehicle to the location, whether that’s going camping or to the beach or on a picnic, or to the sidelines of a sporting event — or even just a shopping trip to CostCo. Utility wagons can fill that need, especially lightweight folding wagons that fit in a trunk, but they can be a real hassle to pull — especially when hauling heavier loads, going uphill, and navigating rougher terrain. In recent years, electric-assist utility wagons are becoming more widely available, but most of them are rather basic with only rudimentary controls, whereas the e-Wagon Air is the first I’ve seen that seems to focus on its safety and control elements as a selling point.

With the claim of being the “world’s first electric wagon equipped with active safety system,” and its ability to save “up to 90% of effort” when pulling a load of 150 pounds up an incline thanks to 30Nm of torque from the dual motors, the specs of the e-Wagon Air look promising. With a range of 5 miles (8km) per charge from its 135Wh battery, the ability to quickly fold into a fraction of its full size, and weighing in at 40 pounds, it could prove to become a staple gear item for a variety of households (or businesses).

The following video offers a glimpse at this folding electric utility wagon, which Outisan is currently running a crowdfunding campaign for in order to streamline production of this model:

[As always, our coverage of a product or a crowdfunding campaign isn’t an endorsement, and it’s worth a reminder that crowdfunding campaigns aren’t a sure thing, and there are inherent risks to backing them. Please do not contribute any money to a crowdfunding campaign that you aren’t prepared to lose, because instead of receiving the product or perk you are expecting, you might end up getting nothing. As in zilch, zip, nada, bupkis. Caveat emptor and all that.]
