Thiess inks $531m mining contract in Indonesia

Thiess has secured a $US330 million ($531 million) mining contract with Kapuas Bara Utama (KBU) in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia.

The six-year project reaffirms Thiess’ strong experience in the region, where it has operated for over 35 years.

Under the contract, the company will manage all mining activities, including site establishment, technical services, overburden removal, and water management.

Mobilisation for the project is set to begin in early 2025, aligning with Thiess’ strategy to strengthen its foothold in key markets while fostering partnerships with clients and communities.

“This contract highlights the trust that Kapuas Bara Utama has placed in Thiess as a partner of choice in the mining industry,” Thiess group executive chair and chief executive officer Michael Wright said.

“It reflects our team’s capability to deliver innovative, productive, and sustainable solutions that help our clients achieve their goals.”

Thiess group executive Asia Cluny Randell said this contract represents an exciting chapter for the company in the Central Kalimantan.

“Securing this partnership further strengthens our presence in the region, where we have consistently delivered value to our clients, whilst contributing positively to local communities,” Randell said.

Thiess plans to empower local communities through initiatives such as procurement programs that support village-owned enterprises and providing diverse workforce opportunities.

The company will also extend its Clean River Program in collaboration with the International River Foundation and the local community, demonstrating its commitment to environmental stewardship.

Additionally, Thiess will work alongside Kapuas Bara Utama to upgrade and maintain public roads near the project site.

“Thiess is set to deliver exceptional outcomes through this partnership, reinforcing its reputation as a trusted mining services provider in the Asia-Pacific region,” Thiess said.
