SINGAPORE — On the sidelines of the Singapore International Energy Expo (SIEW), CleanTechnica bumped into colleagues from Toyota Motor Asia Pacific (TMAP) and re-confirmed the release of Toyota’s bZ4X by 2026. The Philippine Land Transportation Office (LTO) already approved the homologation of the SUV.

It is possible that the vehicle will be launched within the first half of next year, but a preview is expected before the end of the year.

The dedicated battery electric vehicle (BEV), a cornerstone of Toyota’s global “Beyond Zero” strategy, has cleared a significant hurdle, signaling its imminent arrival to the local market.

As the LTO granted homologation approval for the Toyota BEV, Philippine motoring media outlets C! Magazine, CarGuidePH, Top Gear Philippines, and ZigwheelsPH posted initial reports.

While an official launch date and pricing from Toyota Motor Philippines remain under wraps, the LTO documents provide a glimpse into the potential specifications for the Philippine-bound model, which may come from factories in China, Japan, or Indonesia. If freight costs were to be considered, China might be a good import origin, with a factory in Guangzhou. The Toyota Motomachi plant in Aichi Prefecture in Japan is the farthest.

The most logical source would be the PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) Karawang plant in West Java, Indonesia, where production began in late 2025. But this is all speculative at this moment.

Documents show the bZ4X will arrive with a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive (AWD) configuration, a setup that promises robust performance and enhanced traction. Early reports, citing details from the LTO papers, even hint at an impressive total system output of approximately 343 horsepower, positioning the Toyota EV as a formidable contender in the rapidly growing electric SUV segment.

This drivetrain is expected to be paired with a 73.1-kWh (net) battery, offering an estimated maximum cruising range of around 456 kilometers on a single charge. This range would make it a practical option for daily commutes and inter-city travel within the archipelago. The inclusion of battery pre-conditioning is also anticipated, a feature that helps optimize charging efficiency and battery longevity, especially in varying climates. Moreover, local charging stations have ports for levels 1 and 2, and CCS.

The arrival of the bZ4X represents a pivotal moment for Toyota in the Philippines.

For years, TMP has been a leader in introducing hybrid technology to a larger market consistent with its philosophy of catering to a wider audience. Already the Prius, Corolla Cross Hybrid, and RAV4 Hybrid have gained significant traction. The bZ4X, however, marks Toyota’s first foray into the pure electric vehicle segment locally, setting the stage for a broader portfolio of BEVs in the coming years.

While official pricing will only be revealed at launch, market observers speculate that the bZ4X will be strategically priced to compete with established electric SUVs like the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6.

Parallel gray-market import units have previously hinted at price points ranging from P2.350 million to P2.950 million, suggesting the official variant could fall within a similar competitive bracket.

An important note if the question of gray imports and homologation might come up:

The rules of homologation inspection do not formally apply to parallel import vehicles in the Philippines in the same way they do for vehicles intended for official market entry. The tariff rules, however, apply.

Local homologation requires manufacturers to submit proof of compliance with safety and emission regulations to the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), which then issue an Emission Conformity Certificate (CoC) after review.
