Tesla reports that it is seeing strong demand for the Model Y produced in its German factory, such that the company has switched to two full shifts per day. Now, before we get deeper into the news, note that Tesla transitioned to three shifts at the end of 2022. So, demand for the Germany-produced Model Y dropped enough that Tesla dropped to less than two shifts a day for a while, and the rebound now to two shifts a day doesn’t return vehicle production in Germany to its peak.
Anyway, though, Model Y demand has grown a bit possibly due to new variants (esp. the cheaper Standard version) becoming available. However, the biggest factor appears to be Tesla using the Germany factory more for exports due to the tariff war putting extra costs on US-produced Model Y vehicles. In particular, German-produced Model Ys are now being sent to Canada instead of US-produced ones. (That can’t be cost-efficient, by the way.) However, Giga Berlin sends its electric crossovers to many markets.
“We deliver to well over 30 markets and definitely see a positive trend there,” André Thierig, the Giga Berlin factory manager, said. Thierig also noted that the company increased to two shifts per day in September, but that it needs to ramp up further due to the new model variants and growing demand.
Naturally, since this factory doesn’t supply vehicles to Tesla’s two biggest markets, the USA and China, which have seen shrinking demand, we don’t really know what Tesla’s global consumer demand trends are at the moment. I guess we’ll see in a little more than a month.
