A little while back, Tesla launched a Supercharger for businesses program. Basically, it’s white label Superchargers that you can slap your own branding on.
That didn’t make much sense a few years ago. A business could buy Tesla Superchargers, but it didn’t make any sense for them to not be Tesla branded. Then, however, almost every automaker under the sun agreed to adjust their electric vehicles to make them compatible with Tesla Superchargers … er, I mean, with the North American Charging Standard (NACS). Now, it’s just the charging station technology EV drivers of all sorts are going to want and expect.
Perhaps there are other business-branded Tesla Superchargers out there that just haven’t gotten much attention, or perhaps the first set of them is the collection spotted at a Suncoast Credit Union location in Land O’ Lakes, Florida. The site hosts 8 of Tesla’s 325 kW V4 Supercharging stalls.
Tesla’s “Supercharger for Business” webpage went with the following subheading: “Owned By You, Managed By Tesla.” The company also writes, “Purchase and install Superchargers at your business. Superchargers are compatible with all electric vehicles (EVs), bringing EV drivers to your business by offering convenient, reliable charging.” I’ll be honest — I do find that a little confusing. Not all electric vehicles are able to use Superchargers…. Some only have CCS or even CHAdeMO compatibility. Even among new EVs, not all brands have partnered and agreed to use the North American Charging Standard. Well, anyway, it’s just a bit of misleading, incorrect marketing.
“By purchasing your own Superchargers, you get the technology, reputation and industry knowledge that we’ve acquired from over a decade of managing Supercharger operations.” That is very true. Other charging networks don’t have nearly the reputation or reliability that Tesla’s Superchargers have.
It is also worth noting that most of the EVs in the US are Teslas, so there’s a better than 50% chance the cars pulling up to use these Superchargers will be Teslas themselves, and the drivers will have gotten there due to the Tesla’s navigation guiding them there. “Superchargers account for 99% of fast charging by Tesla drivers in the U.S. Feature your charging site on our in-car map and Tesla drivers can be automatically routed to charge at your business when navigating with Trip Planner.”
Tesla also manages the stations like they are its own. “We treat your site like we treat our sites. By providing you with a full-service package that includes network operations, preventative maintenance and driver support, we’re able to guarantee 97% uptime—the highest in the industry.”
It’s interesting to see how this credit union decided to design its own Superchargers. I wonder how much they will help business, and I wonder what businesses will be next to add these to their parking lots.
