SparkCharge’s VP of Operations, Yves Toussaint, and his people reached out to CleanTechnica and wanted to let us know about some of the innovations in their mobile off-grid EV charger and off-grid EV charging network. We had an online Q&A which unveiled not only the advances from SparkCharge but also insights into the status of today’s EV charging industry.

Want to know what’s ahead for the future of mobile EV charging? Read on.

Q: At SparkCharge, the mission is to revolutionize the EV charging industry by making charging faster, more accessible, and more sustainable. What is your company doing that hasn’t been done previously in the EV charging industry?

A: At SparkCharge, we’re redefining what EV charging can look like by offering a completely mobile, large capacity charging service—something the industry has never seen at scale before. We’ve eliminated the hurdles of traditional charging stations with our Charging as a Service (CaaS) programs (Mobile Battery Charger, Off-Grid Power Hub, and Permanent Infrastructure): fully managed, turnkey solutions that deliver charging directly to EVs wherever they are—no installation, no construction, no downtime.

Our mobile network operates off-grid, meaning we’re not dependent on the utility grid or public infrastructure. This allows us to serve EV fleets in areas where charging was previously impossible or unreliable. We’re not just building stations—we’re providing a charging experience that adapts to the needs of our customers, not the other way around. It’s faster to deploy, more flexible to scale, and entirely built around uptime and operational efficiency. This service-first model is changing how companies think about EV adoption and fleet electrification.

Q: Somerville, MA, where SparkCharge is headquartered, is a working-class community with proximity to the urban landscape of Boston. How has this location been beneficial to your company’s growth?

A: Somerville, MA has played a pivotal role in SparkCharge’s growth. Being in Somerville places us at the intersection of real-world urban challenges and cutting-edge solutions. The community’s practical mindset and progressive energy goals have helped shape our approach to building accessible, scalable, and mobile EV charging infrastructure. It’s a location that keeps us grounded in the needs of everyday people while giving us access to the resources and partners necessary to scale nationally.

Q: Greater Boston lags behind other major metro areas in making the shift to electric vehicles. The region ranks 15th out of the top 25 metros in the US. How has SparkCharge filled this gap in EV charging infrastructure availability?

A: Our presence in Greater Boston has made it easier for businesses and fleet operators to electrify without barriers, helping close the infrastructure gap and drive EV adoption forward. Through our Charging as a Service (CaaS) platform, we’re enabling EV charging anywhere it’s needed—whether that’s at a fleet depot, a rideshare lot, or even curbside in dense urban areas where installing fixed infrastructure is difficult or impossible. By bypassing the long timelines and high costs of permanent installation, we’ve accelerated access to charging across the region.

Q: How do people in the greater Boston area respond when they see the SparkCharge mobile van driving by?

A: In Boston and everywhere else, when people see our SparkCharge vans—especially when they’re actively charging—people naturally stop and engage. Passersby often approach our technicians with genuine interest and plenty of questions. We love these moments; they’re great opportunities to showcase how our solutions make EV charging more flexible and accessible.

Q: The capability for “businesses to charge anywhere, anytime” is mighty appealing. You offer a mobile charging solution. What’s a case study example of a business that has taken advantage of this SparkCharge solution?

A: A great example is a Los Angeles-based client with a large fleet of EV vans delivering to convenience stores. Their vehicles leave the depot at different times, run varied routes, and return with different states of charge throughout the day. We provide a turnkey mobile charging solution, handling all charging operations, including plugging and unplugging the vehicles. This allows the fleet owner to focus entirely on delivering goods, without worrying about when, where, or how to charge the vehicles.

Q: How do employees who drive EVs from a fleet react when a SparkCharge mobile van pulls up to provide EV charging-as-a-service for them?

A: Fleet drivers love it. When a SparkCharge van arrives to provide charging, it removes a major worry: range anxiety. They appreciate the convenience of getting fast charging without having to search for a station. It keeps their day running smoothly and helps them stay on schedule. For many, it’s a “wow” moment that highlights how seamless and driver-friendly EV operations can be with mobile charging.

Q: Your company offers an on-site team to manage charging. How expensive is this in comparison to other charging options? Is the charging price variable, based on whether the vehicle can accommodate Level 2 or Level 3 charging?

A: That’s right—our onsite team is a key part of SparkCharge’s turnkey service. It removes operational headaches for clients. While customer needs can vary, we aim to keep pricing simple and transparent, typically offering a flat rate per kWh. This helps fleets easily forecast costs. Whether the vehicle requires Level 2 or Level 3 charging, our service is designed to be flexible and scalable, often more cost-effective than investing in fixed infrastructure.

Q: What mechanisms do you have in place so that your “clients are in control of their charging solutions?”

A: We give clients full visibility and control through our software platform. They can monitor sessions in real time, track energy usage, and view detailed reports. This transparency empowers clients to optimize their operations. Additionally, our team works closely with each client to tailor services to their specific needs, whether it’s adjusting routes, charging times, or service levels, so they always remain in control of how and when their fleet is charged.

Q: What was it like to be selected as the mobile off-grid EV charging provider for the 2025 Masters Tournament? Can you drop names of any celebrities that used the service — either directly or through their team?

A: It was truly an honor to be selected as the mobile off-grid EV charging provider for the 2025 Masters! We even made sure some of our golf-loving technicians were on-site to enjoy the experience. While I can’t name names, I can share that several CEOs from sponsoring companies used our service and were thrilled with the convenience. It was a fantastic showcase of how mobile charging can support high-profile events.

Q: SparkCharge just raised $30.5 million in capital to accelerate a mobile EV charging expansion. What enhancements will this capital provide to the company and to your customers?

A: This new capital is a huge boost for SparkCharge’s growth. It allows us to scale operations, expand into new markets (such as Mexico and Canada), and enhance our technology. For customers, it means more service availability, faster response times, and continual improvements. It also supports investment in our software platform, giving clients even greater control and insights. Overall, it’s about delivering an even more seamless, flexible, and reliable mobile charging experience.

Q: Has the recent downturn in US EV sales affected your projections for more companies to electrify their fleets? How do you envision EV fleet adoption in the next 1, 3, 5, or 10 years?

A: The recent dip in retail EV sales hasn’t really impacted our outlook—fleet electrification continues to move forward. Many companies remain committed and are actively planning. Over the next year, we expect steady growth, with more fleets turning to flexible solutions like mobile charging to support operations. In 3–5 years, EVs will make up a significant share of light- and medium-duty fleets. In 10 years, EV fleets will be mainstream. The long-term trend is clear—fleets are electrifying, and demand for flexible charging is only growing.
