Scots power the world’s largest virtual power plant

London, September 15, 2025, (Oilandgaspress) –––Scotland is making waves in the world of green tech.

Households across the country are helping to power the world’s largest Virtual Power Plant (VPP), as Octopus Energy’s tech platform Kraken smashes through a record-breaking milestone of 2GW of managed energy devices.

With over 20,000 local green devices connected to Kraken – from electric vehicles and batteries, to heat pumps and solar panels – Scottish households are helping to reduce the grid’s reliance on dirty fossil fuels, soaking up cheap, clean power when it’s abundant.

Thanks to savvy smart tariffs like Intelligent Octopus Go, Octopus customers in Scotland are feeding a whopping 134MW into the VPP – enough renewable power to make 4.5 million cuppas or power a city the size of Aberdeen for 2 hours.

Instead of one big power station churning out electricity for the country, a VPP uses thousands of smart green devices working together – flexibly charging when the wind is blowing, the sun is shining, and energy is at its cheapest and cleanest.

This brings lower bills to everyone, a greener energy grid, and makes use of more homegrown renewable power.

Kieron Stopforth, Head of Flexibility, at Octopus Energy said: “Scotland is helping make history in the world of green tech.

“Every electric car plugged in, every battery installed by Scots, is all making the whole energy system more resilient and cleaner by using renewable power when it’s abundant.

“At Octopus, we’re all about local customers coming together to do their bit to balance the grid and make energy cheaper and greener for everyone.”

Adam Watson, an Intelligent Octopus Go customer from Scotland, added: “We’re lucky in Scotland to have plentiful clean energy sources, and using the Intelligent Octopus Go tariff makes it really simple to move our electricity consumption to those greener times for the grid.

“It’s great to feel part of the solution, rather than the problem, knowing that our heating, transport and other household use is as green as possible.”
