Rio Tinto has donated $750,000 to support relief efforts across Queensland after the state was battered by almost two weeks of severe weather.
The funds will go towards organisations like the Queensland Flying Doctors Service (RFDS) and the Queensland Red Cross. Both are providing medical care and evacuation centres to those impacted by the disaster.
“Our hearts go out to everyone in the communities affected by the devastating floods, who include our team members and local suppliers and partners,” Rio Tinto chief executive Australia Kellie Parker said.
“We’re grateful for the extraordinary efforts of the Queensland Red Cross and the Queensland Royal Flying Doctors and hope this contribution helps them continue to provide much-needed support to those in crisis.
“North Queenslanders have shown incredible resilience, and these organisations are making a real difference for those in need.”
Rio will also match any employee donations to flood relief efforts.
The major’s Western Australian operations were similarly impacted by wild weather in January when Tropical Cyclone Sean made itself known along the Pilbara coastline.
Rio Tinto’s rail and port operations were impacted by the weather event and while damage assessments are still ongoing, the major has seen the majority of its rail and port services return to operations.
“The company is working to mitigate impacts and will provide an update at its full year results on 19 February 2025,” Rio Tinto said in a statement.
“First quarter shipments will be affected. Overall shipment guidance for 2025 remains unchanged.”
