Rio Tinto brought elite rugby talent to central Queensland last week, teaming up with Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) to deliver an unforgettable sporting experience for Gladstone students.
As part of Rio Tinto’s ongoing commitment to supporting sport, education and community development in regional Queensland, the company organised a rugby clinic at Tannum Sands State School.
Students from grades 3 to 6 took part in interactive rugby drills and a Q&A session with Queensland Reds fullback and four-Test Wallaby Jock Campbell on Friday. Campbell recently captained the Reds against the British & Irish Lions.
He was joined by Reds Super W co-captain Ivania Wong, the team’s record-holder for most tries and appearances, and Reds Women’s head coach Andrew Fraser.
The initiative was designed to inspire young people to embrace teamwork, resilience, and self-belief, while showcasing the opportunities sport can provide.
Rio Tinto Boyne aluminium smelter general manager Shona Markham said the QRU partnership is part of a broader strategy to invest in regional communities.
“We are proud to continue our partnership with the Queensland Rugby Union and bring the Reds to Gladstone,” Markham said.
“This initiative is about more than sport – it’s about inspiring young people, building confidence, and creating pathways for future success.
“Rio Tinto is committed to supporting opportunities like this in the communities where we live and work.”
QRU chief executive David Hanham said it was great to work with Rio to bring these clinics out to regional communities and teach the important lessons you can learn from team sport.
“It’s always a privilege to connect with young players in regional communities,” he said. “Whether they go on to play rugby or not, the lessons they take away – teamwork, resilience, and self-belief – are what really matter.”
The Gladstone rugby clinic is part of Rio Tinto’s wider investment in regional Queensland, which includes funding for community programs, education initiatives, and career development opportunities across the state.
