Pilbara Minerals expansion underway

NRW Contractors has announced its subsidiary Primero Group has been awarded a construction contract for the next phase of the Pilgangoora P680 expansion project in WA.

The contract, awarded by Pilbara Minerals’ Pilgangoora Operations (POPL), is for structural, mechanical, piping, electrical, and instrumental construction on the project located 120km south of Port Hedland.

The award follows a formal early contractor involvement phase to determine construction methodology, cost and schedule.

Under the contract, Primero will be responsible for the construction of the crushing and ore sorting facilities, at an approximate value of $64 million.

Primero will also assist with providing commissioning, integration and shutdown support, and is scheduled to complete the project in the third quarter of 2024 with works commencing immediately.

“It is pleasing for Primero to be awarded this contract following the combined efforts of Primero and POPL teams in the successful delivery of the first stage of the P680 expansion,” Primero managing director Michael Gollschewski said.

“We look forward to building on what is already a strong partnership with the POPL team.”

NRW’s managing director Jules Pemberton welcomed the contract and the continuation of the company’s ties with POPL.

“This award continues to build on the long association between Pilbara Minerals and Primero that began with the design and construction of the original Pilgan plant and continues with the delivery of the P680 expansion project,” he said.

“We look forward to the successful completion of these works.”

The operations consist of two processing plants, the Pilgan plant, which NRW was involved in the construction of, and the Ngungaju plant.

The P680 expansion project targets the Pilgan plant and aims to increase its annual output to 680,000 tonnes of spodumene concentrate.

The hope is that an increased production output will position Pilbara Minerals to service the growing demand for lithium as net-zero targets approach.
