The California Energy Commission just announced there are over 201,000 public and shared EV charging ports operating in California now. This total is huge and obviously much more than in other US states. In March of this year, the CEC announced that the total number of EV charging ports in California exceeded 178,000, so there has been quite an increase just in the last handful of months. California Energy Commission staff answered some questions for CleanTechnica about these matters and more.

California has about 201,180 fully public and shared electric vehicle (EV) charging ports. What are shared EV charging ports?

Shared private chargers are located at parking space(s) designated by a property owner or lessee to be available to, and accessible by, employees, tenants, visitors, and residents. Examples include workplaces and shared parking at a multifamily residence.

The total number of public and shared EV charging ports is 68% more than the number of gasoline nozzles statewide, according to the California Energy Commission (CEC). Are California gas station pumps and nozzles declining in number?

The CEC keeps track of the number of stations in accordance with the Petroleum Industry Information Reporting Act (PIIRA). Are the majority of California’s public EV chargers Level 2?

Yes — there are 182,548 Level 2 chargers compared to 18,632 direct current fast chargers.

In 2019, there were just under 42,000 California EV charging ports and now there are a little over 200,000. How did the state of California grow its EV charging infrastructure so fast?

Since the Governor Newsom’s executive order in 2020 calling for a rule to require all new car sales to be zero-emission by 2035, ZEV sales have risen dramatically. To meet this demand, California has invested billions to expand EV charging infrastructure via Clean Transportation Program investments. California is tearing down barriers to ZEV deployment, spending billions to speed ZEV infrastructure deployment, and deploying infrastructure in hard-to-reach and low-income areas.

How many more public and shared EV charging ports will California install in the next 5–10 years?

We are watching increased private investment by consortiums like IONNA and OEMs like Rivian, Ford, and others that are actively installing EV charging stations throughout the state. As the number of publicly available fast chargers and chargers at home has increased, our projections for charger installation numbers have been revised and are continuing to be revised.

Does the state of California provide any EV purchase incentives currently?

Grants and rebates for thousands of dollars are available for low-income Californians to purchase ZEVs. Learn more at ClimateAction.ca.gov or ElectricForAll.org.

Are there about 800,000 home EV chargers in California now?

Yes, that is correct, based on CEC analysis.
