NIO has launched a couple of other brands in the past year and a half in order to keep its sales rising in the hyper-competitive Chinese EV market — the ONVO “family vehicle” brand and the firefly super small vehicle brand. One might have thought the firefly brand would stick to China, where more than a million small EVs are sold each year. However, small vehicles are also popular in many other places — India, Europe, other parts of Asia, Africa, South America. It appears NIO is getting ready to expand the firefly brand into some of those markets.

The company has begun production of a right-hand drive (RHD) model. It will launch in Singapore, but the UK must be in the plans, and Australia too, and one would think India, South Africa, Indonesia, Australia, and other markets, right?

This is how NIO puts it: “NIO’s high-end small car brand firefly started mass production of its right-hand drive (RHD) model, with the first units headed for Singapore. This marks a major step forward in firefly’s global expansion, paving the way for entry into more international markets.

“Since its launch on April 19, firefly has kept up an impressive pace in global rollout. It achieved its first European deliveries in less than four months, setting a new record for NIO’s overseas market expansion. The model is now available in the Netherlands, Norway, and Belgium, with test drives and deliveries soon to begin in Denmark, Greece, Austria, Portugal, and Luxembourg.

“firefly is committed to building the finest small cars for a global community. Designed for urban mobility, it combines outstanding active and passive safety, original design, thoughtful use of space, intelligent features, and dynamic driving, redefining what a small car can achieve. Now, firefly is bringing a new generation of high-end small EVs to more users worldwide.”

It’s a slick looking, fun, techie little car, isn’t it?

I know about half of our readers are Americans, and we may never see this vehicle on the road in the real world, but I guarantee we’d love to see it selling well in markets around the world that do appreciate and buy small cars. I’ll be eagerly tracking its expansion and sales.
