Chinese electric vehicle producers continue to expand across the world. In the latest cases, NIO has announced expansion into Azerbaijan and XPENG has announced expansion into Nepal.

NIO’s Entry into Azerbaijan

NIO has partnered with Green Car in Azerbaijan, where COP29 (the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change) is taking place. Green Car will be its local distributor and service provider. That will also include building out NIO’s charging and battery swap network in the country — and also NIO Houses.

NIO deliveries in Azerbaijan will begin in the second quarter of 2025.

I’m sure you’re all familiar with Green Car, but just in case you need a refresher, here’s more on the company: “Green Car (‘Green Car’ LLC), established in 2014, is a pioneering force in Azerbaijan’s green technology sector, specializing in the promotion and integration of electric vehicles and sustainable transport solutions. Green Car’s mission is to drive the transition to green transportation by offering innovative, eco-friendly vehicle options and supporting infrastructure that fosters a cleaner, more sustainable future.”

“The global automotive industry is undergoing an exciting revolution. NIO, as a global smart EV company, is impressive in the innovation in core technologies and user experience,” Rustam Ibrahimov, COO of Green Car, said. “Green Car shares NIO’s vision of sustainability, and we look forward to jointly promoting Azerbaijan and the Caucasus’s transition to EVs.”

NIO entered its first foreign market, the EU, in 2021. As of today, it is selling six models in 10 European countries. The models are the NIO EL8 (ES8 in China), ET7, EL7 (ES7 in China), ET5, ET5T, and EL6 (ES6 in China). To complement that, “NIO has built 58 Power Swap Stations and integrated over 600,000 non-NIO chargers. At the same time, eight NIO Houses, 10 NIO Spaces, and 45 service centers have been opened.”

Much more recently, last month, NIO expanded into the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, starting in the UAE. “Moving forward, the Company will push forward the development of and innovation in core technologies, serve users in more countries and regions, thereby contributing to global sustainability and safeguarding the blue sky shared by all.”

XPENG’s Entry into Nepal

It seems like NIO and XPENG always enter new markets around the same time, but different markets. In this case, announced earlier this week, XPENG has entered Nepal. It is working with local distributor CG Motors, and the first showroom has officially been opened — in Thapathali, Kathmandu. Delegates of the Chinese Embassy joined in the company’s entry into the market. XPENG is now in more than 30 different countries and regions.

The first 25 G6 electric cars were delivered at the ceremony as well. “The G6 is rated under the top 5-Star Euro NCAP as passing the most rigorous safety test in the world,” XPENG writes. “G6 also brings advanced autonomous driving technology, SEPA 2.0 structure, frequent OTA updates, XOS operating system, and 800V super-fast charging. Its motor power / torque are 190 kW power and 440 Nm respectively and it features a 66kwh battery pack with a range of 435 km. Additional features include 50:50 weight distribution in the front and rear axles for overall sporty performance, an aluminum die-cast body, and 9-dimension battery safety, which makes the G6 stand out.”

With this launch, XPENG is already in 20 sales and service centers in Nepal. CG Motors wants to grow that number to 40 within one year. It is also aiming to install 200 chargers, which would be a big increase over its current 244+. (I know, 244 is a weird number to add a plus too — is the total 245 or what?)

Congratulations to XPENG and NIO on their continued global expansion and bringing clean, smart, fun electric vehicles to more and more people around the world!
