Newmont celebrates 10 years of Red Chris

Newmont Corporation has marked the 10th anniversary of the Red Chris mine by uplifting the Tahltan Nation communities through a $C8 million ($8.98m) investment.

Commemorating a decade of successful co-management of the site with the Tahltan Nation, Newmont’s contribution is set to benefit the First Nations communities of Telegraph Creek, Dease Lake and Iskut.

Located in Canada, British Columbia within the Golden Triangle – a region that holds major gold, silver and copper deposits – Red Chris is an open-pit copper and gold mine that has become a key economic pillar in Tahltan territory.

Employing nearly 220 Tahltans and generating approximately $C100 million annually in business with the Tahltan Nation Development Corporation (TNDC), the mine also pays annual royalties to the Tahltan Heritage Trust and contributes mineral tax revenue to the Province of British Columbia which is shared directly with the Tahltan Nation.

This shared stake and involvement in the mine is the highlight of Newmont’s multi-million-dollar funding for the Tahltan Nation communities.

From improving overall wellbeing of locals, building more community-use areas, recreation facilities, and a greenhouse space, the funding is expected to be used across a range of projects.

A portion of the investment will also support planning and pre-development efforts to improve housing in each community.

“Newmont acquired the Red Chris mine in November 2023, and we know that our projects and operations can only succeed when the communities that host them are also thriving,” Newmont chief executive officer (CEO) Tom Palmer said.

TNDC CEO Todd den Engelsen echoed Palmer’s sentiments, adding that the 10th anniversary was more than just a milestone.

“It is a reflection of how far the Tahltan Nation has come in rising up, stepping forward, and taking control of its future,” he said. “TNDC’s partnership with Newmont is not just about collaboration – It is about building capacity, leading the way, and creating long-term opportunities for Tahltans, for generations to come.”
