New executive joins Northern Star board

Northern Star Resources has welcomed a new independent non-executive director to its board, taking effect from July 1.

Michael Ashforth has almost thirty years’ experience in law, investment banking and corporate advisory.

Ashforth was previously a Freehills partner, Gresham Partners’ managing director, a Macquarie Capital executive director and AMB Holdings’ executive chairman. He was also a member of the Australian Takeovers Panel for nine years.

Most recently, Ashforth was a regional adviser with Goldman Sachs. He is also currently a director of the Wunan Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation based in Kununurra that empowers and supports Aboriginal people in the east Kimberley region of Western Australia.

“As Australia’s largest ASX-listed gold producer, Northern Star has an enviable portfolio of gold-producing assets and I look forward to helping it continue to provide superior returns to its shareholders,” Ashforth said.

Northern Star chair Michael Chaney welcomed Ashforth to the board.

“Michael’s experience and strategic insights will be extremely valuable to Northern Star as we continue to advance our profitable growth strategy,” Chaney said.

Northern Star non-executive director John Richards will also retire from the board on July 31.

Richards first joined the board in February 2021 when the company officially merged Saracen Mineral Holdings.

As a non-executive director at Saracen, he played a key role in guiding the company through its merger with Northern Star and, prior to that, the acquisition of a 50 per cent stake in the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) operations in WA.

Richards is now turning his attention to his other mining board positions, where he is chair of Sandfire Resources and lead independent director at Sheffield Resources.

“John’s knowledge of the gold sector and his broad commercial experience have been invaluable to the board’s deliberations,” Chaney said.
