Nautilus Solar Grows its Maine Community Solar Portfolio to 160 MW with 15 New Projects Reaching Commercial Operation

In 2024, Nautilus Solar added over 78 MW of capacity in Maine, now providing clean energy to more than 13,700 subscribers in the state.

SANFORD, Maine–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Nautilus Solar Energy® LLC, one of the largest national providers of community solar in the U.S., today highlighted a major update in Maine with 15 community solar projects reaching commercial operation in 2024. These projects added 78 MW of capacity, increasing the company’s total operational capacity in the state to 160 MW. With its existing sites, Nautilus Solar now operates 28 community solar projects across Maine, serving more than 13,700 subscribers, including over 285 commercial and industrial customers. By lowering energy costs for businesses and residents, Nautilus Solar is also contributing to a more sustainable future for local communities.

“The growth of our Maine portfolio is more than just an expansion—it’s about making a greater economic impact in local communities,” said Jeffrey Cheng, CEO of Nautilus Solar. “Community solar plays a vital role in making the benefits of clean energy more accessible to local residents while directly contributing to Maine’s ambitious renewable energy goals. Our projects empower Maine residents and businesses to lower their electricity costs without the burden of costly upfront investments, ensuring that clean energy is both affordable and attainable. As we continue to develop new projects in Maine, we’re excited to expand clean energy access further, drive local investment and contribute to the state’s sustainable future.”

As a full-service solar provider, Nautilus oversees every aspect of its projects, including financing, development, construction, maintenance, and subscriber management, ensuring long-term success and sustainability. Among Nautilus’s portfolio of recently commissioned projects in Maine is the opening of a 7 MW community solar project in Sanford, Maine. Built on a remediated brownfield site, the project illustrates how land contaminated by industrial use can be repurposed into a sustainable and revenue-generating energy source that grows the local economy. Situated on a combination of city-owned land and Maine Turnpike Authority property, the site was previously home to a circuit board recycling facility. Now fully operational, the Sanford community solar project provides clean, renewable energy to more than 960 subscribers.

“Our projects in Maine have also positively impacted the local economy by creating jobs during construction and supporting ongoing site management,” said Cheng. “Our success wouldn’t have been possible without the collective dedication of our employees and business partners—including Central Maine Power, Versant Power and Bangor Hydro District utilities—who have worked together to bring clean energy to Maine and its residents. We are deeply grateful for their hard work and contributions.”
