It was just about two weeks ago that 201 new EV chargers were announced for installation at Michigan apartment complexes. Another EV charger installation project in Michigan was just announced — over 40 fast chargers in Detroit.
The first site is in Canton, Michigan, at a property owned by the real estate developer Dabaja Brothers Development Group. “We started this project because we saw a gap in our community—there was almost nowhere to charge an EV in Canton, and a similar lack of charging across metro Detroit. Together with ChargePoint, we are bringing fast, reliable charging to the community, better enabling us to serve all of our customers,” said Yousef Dabaja, owner/operator at Dabaja Brothers Development Group.
The Detroit area has some charging deserts, and Canton is one of them, hence the new fast charger installation there. Lavonia and Dearborn are two of the other planned sites that will use ChargePoint fast charging stations.
“In total, Dabaja intends to deploy more than 40 ports with more planned across its locations, enabling EV drivers to charge quickly and easily while they shop, dine, or visit local attractions. Each site will feature ChargePoint Express Plus fast charging stations. All stations will be managed by the new ChargePoint Platform, ChargePoint’s next-generation, flexible software solution designed provide real-time insights, monitor performance, adjust pricing, and respond to customer needs.”
While some people don’t think the installation of dozens of new EV chargers is newsworthy, these projects do matter to the people who live locally and travel to and through the areas where the new chargers will be. This fact is true especially in charging deserts. Going from no chargers to even just several means the distance EV drivers must travel to find a charge is decreased significantly, so they have less risk of “range anxiety” and are capable of conveniently driving to more places. Expanding public EV charger availability is the solution to widespread EV use and convenience, not having EVs with 900 miles of range.
According to PlugShare, the Detroit, Warren, Dearborn area has about 350 fast chargers currently. Adding 40 or more new ones matters.
