Metso to deliver cone crushers for BHP’s Whaleback iron ore mine

Metso has secured a contract from mining giant BHP to deliver three MP800 cone crushers for installation at the Mount Whaleback mine in Western Australia.

Under the contract, Metso will deliver high-capacity Nordberg MP Series cone crushers designed for high capacity. These crushers are set to replace the long-serving MP cone crushers at the mine.

Metso mining crushers vice-president Vinicius Vilela said: “The robust and high-capacity MP Series crushers are a step change in the crushing process, enabling maximum operator safety and easy maintenance, as the key components can be accessed from the top of the crushers.

“They provide a more sustainable solution, delivering high crushing force with relatively low energy consumption.”

Metso said its cone crusher offering comprises four product families for different applications and operations.

In a press statement, Mesto said: “The Nordberg MP Series cone crushers feature high capacity and high crushing force for size reduction with good energy efficiency.”’

A part of the Newman processing hub, the Mount Whaleback mine is located in the Pilbara region. It was opened in 1968.

Said to be the world’s single-biggest open-pit iron ore mine, it forms part of a joint venture between BHP and Mitsui and ITOCHU.

Last month, Rio Tinto selected Metso to deliver ten HP Series cone crushers for installation at the Tom Price iron ore mine in Western Australia.

In August 2023, Mesto was selected by Rio Tinto for design and engineering work for a continuous pilot plant (CPP) for the BioIron process.

A low-carbon iron-making process, BioIron uses ore sourced from mines in Pilbara, Australia.

Under the contract, Metso will carry out detailed design work of the CPP’s reduction furnace and other equipment for the BioIron process.
