Not so long ago, France ushered in a new era of solar energy with the passage of a new law that mandates a large rise in solar canopies. The country’s new regulation requires large parking lots to have at least 50% of their space covered in solar canopies. It applies to parking lots that have 80 or more spaces. One of the first assumptions was that this just applied to new parking lots; however, the law is applicable to both new and existing parking lots of such size.
The past week, BayWare Solar Systems became the first distributor of ManOrga Solar products, a French maker of parking canopies. These technologies turn parking lots into true energy centers by combining solar generation and electric mobility.
This collaboration between BayWa re and ManOrga Solar aims to expedite the energy transition and reduce “artificialization of soils” in French car parks. ManOrga Solar, a family firm started in 1971 and headquartered in the Lille metropolitan region, has been designing and building high-quality metal structures for over 53 years. With its acknowledged competence in metal platforms, it is now providing an all-in-one solution for parking canopies. Here are four key points about the offering:
- Manufactured and developed in France: local know-how and controlled deadlines.
- Turnkey solution: primary structure, rails for photovoltaic panels, and integrated options.
- Certified standards: product under ETN (New Technology Survey) and designed according to the Eurocodes for a guarantee of safety and compliance.
- Implementation: Product designed for simple and quick installation on reduced earthworks.
Products ready for photovoltaic self-consumption charging
ManOrga Solar canopies are “designed to integrate perfectly into photovoltaic self-consumption charging projects.” They offer:
- Inverter support on the canopies posts to save space and cabling.
- Support for charging station (on foot), facilitating the addition of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.
- Pre-drilling for the installation of micro-inverters, optimizers and lighting systems, ensuring simplified assembly and perfect integration of equipment
Robust and aesthetic solutions
ManOrga Solar parking canopies are reportedly built with high-quality materials and thus offer long-lasting performance:
- Magnelis Z M310 steel structure: exceptional resistance to corrosion and bad weather.
- Thermoplastic paint: a qualitative, customizable and repairable finish for mechanical resistance and controlled aging.
- 15-year structural warranty.
These shade structures also stand out for their multipurpose, adaptable, optimized design:
- Integrated rainwater drainage system for efficient management.
- Aesthetic and uniform finish, whose modularity and degree of customization allow it to adapt to all configurations.
- Compatibility with climatic constraints: compatible with snow zones C2 and wind zone 3 (terrain IIIb).
Meet the requirements of the APER law
Requiring 50% coverage of outdoor parking areas (new or renovated) with photovoltaic solar panels or vegetation, the APER law, part of the Climate & Resilience law of March 10, 2023, has certain requirements that are sure to be met by BayWare re and ManOrga Solar.
- Since July 1, 2023: obligation for parking areas of 500 to 1,500 m².
- From July 1, 2025: extension of this obligation for areas between 1,500 and 10,000 m².
Photovoltaics & mobility: a Clear Convergence
Photovoltaic carports provide unique potential for bridging the energy transition and encouraging electric mobility. BayWa re Solar Systems, with its photovoltaic expertise, is positioning itself to play a vital role in this evolution. According to Olivia Doise, Head of Mounting Systems at BayWa re, “The number of light electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in France is predicted to grow from 2 million today to 18 million by 2035, accounting for 40% of the vehicle fleet. Beyond regulatory challenges, car park managers must meet their customers’ expectations, power their vehicle fleet, and generate new revenue.”
In the USA, as we find ourselves troubled with a backwards moving climate predator, head of the “union,” its especially foreign — and refreshing — to see this news. It’s been 9 years since I was inspired by an action in the “Sunshine State” to make use of such ideas on the other side of the pond, but we will be getting so such policies in Florida or the USA.
