A group of Europe’s largest logistics, transport and power companies, including Pepsico, Nestlé, IKEA and EDF, is urging the European Commission to set binding zero-emission targets for large shippers and buyers of transport services.
Signatories include some of the biggest players in freight and logistics, demonstrating that businesses are ready to lead the transition to a climate-neutral Europe with the right policy support.
The letter, addressed to President von der Leyen and Transport Commissioner Tzitzikostas, calls for a regulation by the end of 2025 to ensure that corporate fleets in the heavy-duty sector transition to zero-emission vehicles. In this letter the companies stress that binding targets would support logistics companies in their transition to zero emission trucks. This would increase certainty for Europe’s industry to further invest in the development of charging infrastructure and electricity grids while safeguarding Europe’s leadership and competitiveness on zero emission trucks, attracting jobs and investments into clean tech.
The signatories emphasize that supply of zero-emission vehicles, rapid charging infrastructure deployment, and grid readiness must go hand-in-hand with these targets.
Stef Cornelis, Fleets & Freight director at T&E said: “This new European initiative is a first of its kind asking logistics companies to electrify their deliveries. The message of this letter is clear, green leaders in the sector are ready to take the lead and call on President von der Leyen to move forward with this. These green delivery targets for freight buyers will support trucking companies in making the switch to electric. They will give Europe’s power sector the certainty they need to further ramp up investments in charging infrastructure and electricity grids”.
