Chevron Prepares to Close Hess Acquisition Chevron is preparing for a quick finalization of the Hess Crop. Acquisition, even as the two still await the decision of the arbitration court on Exxon’s right to first refusal on Hess’s stake in the Stabroek Block in Guyana.
Reuters reported the news, citing unnamed sources and “an industry analyst”, who said that Chevron was even working on severance packages for some Hess employees who would be let go after the tie-up.
Yet for that to happen, the International Chamber of Commerce needs to rule in Chevron’s favor. The dispute that the ICC ruled on earlier this month but has yet to make its decision public, concerns the Guyanese operations of Exxon, in which Hess Corp. is a minority partner with 30%. It is this 30 stake that Chevron is especially interested in, but, it turns out, so is Exxon.

Simon has wide-ranging expertise and experience in global finance, strategy, governance and management, gained across the energy industry internationally. In a career of 35 years with Shell, he held senior finance and management roles internationally and was chief financial officer and a member of the board from 2009 until 2017.
Simon is currently a non-executive director of Rio Tinto plc and Rio Tinto Limited. Rio Tinto announced in February that he will step down from those roles in the second half of 2025. Harbour Energy plc announced earlier today that Simon will step down from its board with immediate effect. Wattlab and HGK Shipping team up for world’s first hybrid solar-powered inland shipping vessel Dutch maritime solar innovator Wattlab has delivered a solar energy system for HGK Shipping’s inland shipping cargo vessel Blue Marlin. Representing a major technical milestone and step forward for sustainable inland shipping, the vessel’s 192 solar panels will provide power to both the onboard and propulsion systems, making the Blue Marlin the first inland shipping vessel in the world capable of hybrid sailing with solar power.
HGK Shipping is a European inland waterway shipping company operating a fleet of 350 vessels. With annual freight figures in the region of 43 million tonnes, HGK Shipping is considered to be a leading player in European dry bulk, gas and chemical transport. Wattlab, which is also active in the seagoing shipping industry, brings broad maritime experience to this pioneering project.
Wattlab has worked previously with HGK Shipping. In Q2 2024, HGK’s 135-metre long dry cargo vessel MS Helios made headlines – and entered The Guinness Book of Records – for having the world’s largest solar panel installation on an inland shipping vessel. The MS Helios is equipped with 312 solar panels.
Fully integrated system
The solar energy systems of the Helios and the Blue Marlin differ in one critical aspect. Unlike the Helios, where solar energy was used exclusively for low-voltage onboard (hotel) systems, the Blue Marlin features a more advanced, fully integrated system capable of contributing power directly to the ship’s high voltage electric propulsion.
This, says Wattlab co-founder and COO David Kester, is a technical milestone. “The Blue Marlin’s 192 solar panels are not only connected to the low-voltage onboard systems but also to the high-voltage propulsion network. This means that HGK Shipping can proudly state that they are the first inland shipping company to operate a vessel that uses solar power directly for propulsion.”
Automated energy management
Delivering up to 35 kilowatts under optimal conditions, the Blue Marlin’s solar power system will operate in conjunction with four diesel generators powering the electric propulsion system. This fully integrated setup enables ‘peak shaving’, where the combination of solar energy and batteries will prevent the need for activating an additional generator during high-demand periods. The system’s automated energy management will distribute electrical energy where and when it is required, increasing efficiency and reducing fuel consumption.
“Furthermore, in situations where the ship is lightly loaded and travelling downstream, we anticipate that it may even sail using only solar power for limited periods—an unprecedented achievement in the inland shipping sector,” continues Kester.
Abdelmadjid Tebboune meets Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi The President of the Republic of Algeria Abdelmadjid Tebboune has met Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi in Algiers today to discuss the company’s activities in the country, including gas production and export, ongoing and future investments, and energy transition initiatives. The Minister of State and Minister of Energy, Mines and Renewables Energies Mohamed Arkab, the CEO of Sonatrach Rachid Hachichi, and the CEO of Sonelgaz Mourad Adjal also participated in the meeting.
The visit offered the opportunity for Eni and its partner SONATRACH to sign a new hydrocarbons contract for the Zemoul El Kbarunder area, in the framework of the Law no. 19-13 governing hydrocarbons activities. The contract, with a duration of 30 years, covers a development and exploration area of about 4200 sq Km located approximately 300 km southeast of Hassi Messaoud, also includes neighbouring assets previously under separate contracts.
With this renewed framework, Eni and SONATRACH are further enhancing the value of the asset through a plan encompassing exploration and development operations, leveraging innovative technologies to optimize recovery rates and existing nearby facilities.
This new agreement follows the recent award, in the context of 2024 Algeria Bid Round, of the Reggane II block to Eni in partnership with PTTEP.
