China’s auto market maintains strong growth in January-May China’s auto production and sales logged double-digit increases in the first five months of the year, a sign of vibrant consumption in the world’s second-largest economy.
The country’s auto output totaled 12.83 million units during the period, up 12.7 percent from a year ago, while auto sales rose 10.9 percent to 12.75 million units, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers said Wednesday.
In particular, new energy vehicles production surged 45.2 percent year-on-year to nearly 5.7 million units in the first five months, with sales up by 44 percent year-on-year to 5.61 million units.
EV battery recycling boom fuels green transition In North China’s industrial city of Tianjin, a bustling workshop is bringing discarded electric vehicle batteries back to life through the combined expertise of skilled technicians and automated systems.
The scene exemplifies a massive business opportunity unfolding across China, as the world’s largest electric vehicle market is set to turn battery waste from a pollution challenge into a key asset in its green revolution.
Positioned at the forefront of the country’s sustainable economy, this startup, Tianjin Battery Technology, is targeting this rapidly expanding sector.
The market segment is on the cusp of substantial growth, as China continues to lead the world in the production and sales of new energy vehicles. Additionally, the rising number of end-of-life power batteries is expanding demand for sustainable solutions.
By the end of 2024, China had 31.4 million new energy vehicles, representing about 9 percent of its automobile fleet. Following the government’s launch of trade-in policies, consumer interest in upgrading vehicles surged, which in turn further expanded the recycling market.
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology mandated that passenger vehicle manufacturers provide an eight-year or 120,000-kilometer warranty on core components such as batteries starting from 2016.
Market forecasts indicate that China’s retired power batteries will hit 1.04 million metric tons in 2025 and may surge to 3.5 million tons by 2030.
Ma Youwei, a 40-year-old equipment manager at the Tianjin firm, oversees the disassembly of battery packs and modules. As far as he is concerned, these seemingly “retired “batteries are treasure troves.
In his factory, some disassembled components are reused for secondhand vehicle repairs. Crushing batteries produces copper and aluminum, and the black powder is further refined into battery-grade lithium carbonate.

World sees second-hottest May on record Data shows that the global average surface air temperature was 15.79ºC last month, 0.53ºC higher than the 1991 to 2020 average.
May was an estimated 1.4ºC above the average for 1850 to 1900 – the period used to define the pre-industrial average. It interrupts a sweltering stretch where 21 out of 22 months breached this 1.5ºC threshold, though EU scientists say this is unlikely to last.
“May 2025 breaks an unprecedentedly long sequence of months over 1.5ºC above pre-industrial,” says Carlo Buontempo, director of C3S at ECMWF.
In Europe, May brought drier than average conditions to much of northern and central Europe as well as southern regions of Russia, Ukraine, and Türkiye.
This spring has been a contrast between drier-than-average conditions in the north and west and wetter-than-average conditions across the south and northwestern Russia.
Parts of northwestern Europe saw their lowest precipitation and soil moisture levels since at least 1979. And persistent dry conditions have led to the lowest spring river flow across Europe since records began in 1992.
UN recognizes World Restoration Flagships in East Africa, Mexico, and Spain The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) have named the first World Restoration Flagships for this year, tackling pollution, unsustainable exploitation, and invasive species in three continents. These initiatives are restoring almost five million hectares of marine ecosystems – an area about the size of Costa Rica, which, together with France, is hosting the 3rd UN Ocean Conference.
The three new flagships comprise restoration initiatives in the coral-rich Northern Mozambique Channel Region, more than 60 of Mexico’s islands and the Mar Menor in Spain, Europe’s first ecosystem with legal personhood. The winning initiatives were announced at an event during the UN Ocean Conference in Nice, France, and are now eligible for UN support.
“After decades of taking the ocean for granted, we are witnessing a great shift towards restoration. But the challenge ahead of us is significant and we need everyone to play their part,” said Inger Andersen, Executive Director of UNEP. “These World Restoration Flagships show how biodiversity protection, climate action, and economic development are deeply interconnected. To deliver our restoration goals, our ambition must be as big as the ocean we must protect.”
The World Restoration Flagship awards are part of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration – led by UNEP and FAO – which aims to prevent, halt, and reverse the degradation of ecosystems on every continent and in every ocean. The awards track notable initiatives that support global commitments to restore one billion hectares – an area larger than China – by 2030.
FAO Director-General QU Dongyu said: “The climate crisis, unsustainable exploitation practices and nature resources shrinking are affecting our blue ecosystems, harming marine life and threatening the livelihoods of dependent communities. These new World Restoration Flagships show that halting and reversing degradation is not only possible, but also beneficial to planet and people.”
