KSB GIW sets a ‘new standard’ in vertical pump technology with development of GIW VMD – International Mining

KSB GIW has introduced the GIW® VMD, a vertical slurry pump designed to, the company says, deliver superior efficiency and durability in the most abrasive and demanding slurry applications.

The GIW VMD sets a new standard for vertical pump technology by combining heavy-duty reliability with a fully modular construction, KSB GIW says. Its wet end, mechanical end and cantilever components are all interchangeable, enabling fast adaptation to different operating requirements. This flexible configuration facilitates rapid maintenance, simplified part replacements and customisation to match specific site needs.

“Mining and industrial operations run under challenging conditions that require efficient processes and minimal downtime,” Tyler Ferguson, Engineering Product Manager at KSB GIW, says. “The VMD was engineered with that reality in mind. Its rugged, customizable design provides customers with a pump that is both dependable and adaptable to changing environments.”

The GIW VMD pump is built to withstand severe slurry duties where durability is critical. High chrome alloy materials provide wear resistance and long service life in abrasive duties, while the vertical cantilever design eliminates submerged bearings to reduce the risk of failure and lower service demands, the company claims.

“Advanced engineering sets the GIW VMD apart, highlighted by an innovative dual suction arrangement at both the top and bottom of the pump,” KSB GIW says. “This design maximises clearing and improves operation in high-concentration conditions, giving end users dependable performance in tough environments.”

To support efficiency and uptime, the GIW VMD includes additional features such as a semi-open impeller that handles large solids with ease, minimising clogging and ensuring smooth flow. A keyed impeller system also adds another layer of safety and reliability through secure attachment.

Together, these features extend service intervals, minimise downtime and help operators lower the total cost of ownership. The result is a pump that maintains productivity under the harshest conditions and delivers consistent performance over time, the company says.

“The VMD is designed for mining and industrial processing plants that need equipment capable of handling abrasive slurries without compromising efficiency,” Ferguson says. “With its outstanding wear resistance and flexibility, it provides a dependable solution for plant managers, engineers and operations leaders focused on productivity and cost control. The GIW VMD gives customers confidence not only in meeting today’s challenges but also in ensuring longevity for the future.”
