The Kal Tire recycling facility in Chile has achieved International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS certification.
The certification verifies that the recycling facility processes circular feedstocks and meets the circular materials standards for reclaimed oil, carbon black and syngas.
The facility has the capacity to process five 63-inch tyres (20,000kg) every day, creating 8000kg of carbon black, 6500 litres of oil and 4000kg of steel.
Kal Tire Mining Tire Group senior vice-president Dan Allan said the certification gave customers more confidence in the process.
“Kal Tire is committed to promoting a circular economy where recycled mining tyre products are given their highest and best use,” he said.
“This ISCC PLUS certification ensures customers can confidently source our recycling facility’s outputs knowing they’re 100 per cent derived from waste materials.”
Kal Tire’s facility processes end-of-life mining tyres to convert them to their base elements (carbon black, oil and steel) so they can be reused in new products instead of raw materials.
With the facility’s thermal conversion processes, virtually 100 per cent of the tyre can be reused.
“Years ago, we set out to invest in a solution at the top of the mining tyre recycling hierarchy to help customers solve the great challenge of handling end-of-life mining tyres more sustainably, at a time when government also began calling for environmental leadership and contribution to climate action plans,” Allan said.
