JFE gets grant for martensitic stainless steel seamless pipe for oil country tubular goods

According to GlobalData’s company profile on JFE, Polymer electrolyte fuel cells was a key innovation area identified from patents. JFE‘s grant share as of September 2023 was 38%. Grant share is based on the ratio of number of grants to total number of patents.

A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11773461B2) describes a martensitic stainless steel seamless pipe for oil country tubular goods. The pipe has a specific chemical composition, including elements such as carbon, silicon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, aluminum, vanadium, nitrogen, titanium, copper, and cobalt. The composition of the steel pipe must satisfy a specific formula to ensure its desired properties.

The martensitic stainless steel seamless pipe has a minimum yield stress of 758 MPa, making it suitable for use in demanding oil country tubular goods applications. Additionally, the pipe undergoes a test known as NACE TM0177, Method A, where it is exposed to a test solution containing sodium chloride and adjusted to a pH of 4.0. The pipe does not crack after 720 hours under an applied stress equal to 90% of its yield stress, demonstrating its resistance to corrosion and stress.

The patent also includes several additional claims. Claim 2 states that the chemical composition of the pipe may further include niobium and tungsten. Claim 3 adds calcium, rare earth metals, magnesium, and boron to the list of possible additional elements. Claim 4 repeats the elements mentioned in Claim 3. Claims 5 and 6 specify a narrower range for the titanium content in the chemical composition.

The patent also covers methods for manufacturing the martensitic stainless steel seamless pipe. Claims 7, 8, 9, and 10 describe the steps involved in the manufacturing process, including forming the steel pipe from a specific material, quenching the pipe at a specific temperature, and tempering the pipe at a specific temperature.

Overall, this granted patent presents a martensitic stainless steel seamless pipe with a specific chemical composition and manufacturing process. The pipe exhibits high yield stress and resistance to corrosion and stress, making it suitable for use in oil country tubular goods applications.
