Calgary, AB – The Indigenous Resource Network is excited to see BC taking the next step in providing equity tools for Indigenous ownership in resource projects with the introduction of provincial equity loan guarantees in BC’s budget.

“Since 2022 the Indigenous Resource Network has been advocating for a National Indigenous Guaranteed Loan program, because Ownership is Reconciliation. While IRN has worked hard to see the implementation at the federal level we are pleased to see provinces like BC step up in providing real opportunities for economic reconciliation” said John Desjarlais, executive director of the Indigenous Resource Network.

The IRN acknowledges and commends British Columbia for its commitment to fostering Indigenous ownership. This commitment is seen as a beacon of progress towards dismantling historical barriers and creating a more inclusive and equitable landscape for Indigenous peoples in the resource sector. By embracing such initiatives, provinces are not only acknowledging the need for change but are actively contributing to the broader national conversation surrounding Indigenous ownership and self-determination.

While this is a good first step, there are still many details to be sorted out. IRN looks forward to working with BC on the next steps and moving this important program forward.
