India’s Gainwell Engineering ships its first indigenously-made continuous miner – International Mining

Gainwell Engineering says the first indigenously-manufactured continuous miner package has rolled out from its manufacturing facility in Panagarh, West Bengal, in India, destined for the Jhanjra Colliery, which is part of Eastern Coalfields Ltd (ECL), a subsidiary of Coal India.

The 727 kW GCM345M model weighs 74.8 t and has a mining range of 2,210-4,318 mm. It has a cutting diameter of 1,118 mm, cutting drum width of 3,581 mm and cutting power of 2 x 209 kW.

This achievement not only marks a significant step for Gainwell Engineering but also aligns with the Make in India initiative, strengthening the nation’s vision for self-reliance in manufacturing high-end capital goods, the company says.

The machine was inaugurated at the Jhanjra Project Colliery by Shri Satish Jha, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, ECL, alongside Shri Niladri Roy, Director (Technical), ECL, and other distinguished dignitaries. Gainwell says it extends its gratitude to Coal India and ECL for selecting the company as its trusted equipment partner.

“In line with the growing demand for coal in India, our underground room and pillar  mining equipment is designed to play a crucial role in augmenting India’s efforts to become self-sufficient in energy resources and enhance coal production from underground mines. This machine’s deployment is a proud contribution to India’s energy resilience, ensuring a consistent supply of coal for the nation’s growing needs.

“We owe this milestone to the dedication and operational excellence of our team, whose commitment and expertise made this project possible. Your hard work ensures that Gainwell Engineering continues to lead the way in manufacturing cutting-edge mining equipment right here in India, for India and for the global market. This achievement is not just a step forward for us but for the entire nation as we continue to build a more resilient and self-sufficient India.”
