Continuing our series on how much different brands’ US EV sales surged in the 3rd quarter, it’s now time to have a look at Honda.

Some auto brands actually had a lame 3rd quarter, or even a very lame 3rd quarter (more on that later), so let me just say I wasn’t sure what to expect from Honda — or almost any brand for that matter. However, as you can see in the headline, Honda thrived.

Honda has only one electric model. It was a laggard for a long time, and the company took a shortcut even at this stage by having GM build the majority of the Honda Prologue EV. Nonetheless, many consumers were waiting for Honda, their favorite brand and one they trust the most, to go electric. That’s clear enough from the fact that the Prologue has done relatively well on the US EV market.

Honda certainly took advantage of the expiring US EV tax credit to score a new record quarterly result. The company sold 22,236 units of the Prologue in Q3, which was 75.9% more than in Q3 2024. That was also 18% more than its previous record quarter, Q4 2024.

Did Honda figure out any clever ways to keep the EV tax credit going for a few more months, like GM and Ford did? We don’t know yet. Is it planning to cut the cost of the Prologue massively to keep the sales going, like Hyundai is doing? We also don’t know yet. We’ll see.

Though, I can’t say I’m super bullish on Honda’s efforts. Even with such huge growth in Prologue sales, this is all Honda had to say about the model in its 3rd quarter sales report: “Record electrified sales in September and year-to-date: led by CR-V hybrid, Accord hybrid and Civic hybrid, along with the Prologue EV.” Hmm. Not inspiring. Honda has the 4th best selling fully electric model in the USA (only behind the Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model 3, and Chevrolet Equinox EV, barely), and hardly a peep about it from the company.
