Ground broken on Mazoon Copper Project in Oman

Minerals Development Oman (MDO), through its Mazoon Mining unit, has broken ground on the Mazoon Copper Project in Yanqul, Oman.

The Mazoon Copper Project is poised to become Oman’s largest integrated copper concentrate production project, spanning 20km².

It features five open-pit mines with an estimated 22.9 million tonnes of copper ore reserves. The construction includes a 56,000m² processing plant with the capacity to process 2.5 million tonnes per annum of copper ore.

The mine is projected to produce 115,000tpa of copper concentrate at a 21.5% copper grade.

Additionally, the project’s sustainability measures such as water recycling and waste management systems aim to protect the local environment including air quality and groundwater.

Oman Investment Authority chairman Abdul Salam bin Mohammed Al Murshidi said: “This project marks a transformative step in positioning Oman as a strategic copper hub, contributing to the diversification of our national economy and creating sustainable job opportunities for Omanis.

“We are confident that the project will have a significant positive impact on the local community, supporting SMEs [small and medium-sized enterprises] and driving economic development.”

The Mazoon Copper Project is said to be a response to the increasing global demand for copper.

In addition to this project, MDO is actively pursuing exploration campaigns for other strategic minerals. These include chromite, copper, dolomite, gypsum, limestone and silica.

Minerals Development Oman chairman Badar bin Saud Al Kharusi said: “We are proud to see the progress of Mazoon Copper Project after an extensive series of exploration activities.

“This project marks a milestone for Minerals Development Oman, adding invaluable assets to our portfolio. The company began copper ore extraction from Block 4 in Wilayat of Sohar in 2024 and has continued its exploration efforts across its 23,644km² concession area.

“With the necessary financing secured, the project reflects the trust garnered locally and globally. We are committed to ensuring each project phase meets the highest environmental and social standards.”
