VHM’s Goschen rare earths and mineral sands project in Victoria is progressing to plan, with first production in sight.
The company is targeting first production for the second half of 2026, with early engineering works to commence later this year. Mining licence approval and work plan submissions are also well underway.
VHM’s strategy is to undertake a staged approach at Goshen, including the construction of the mine and facilities capable of processing 1.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of rare earth and mineral sands.
This amount is expected to ramp up to 5Mtpa over three years, with the timeline remaining unchanged.
The project’s environmental effects statement (ESS) was endorsed by the Victorian Planning Minister Sonya Kilkenny in December 2024.
“It’s crucial that we balance development with the environment and these approvals put in place safeguards to protect the environment, including vulnerable species and habitats,” Kilkenny said at the time.
The granting of the ESS was a major milestone for VHM, a company ready to unlock critical minerals essential for renewable energy infrastructure, electric vehicles and everyday technology.
“This recommendation is the result of extensive technical, environmental, and social studies conducted over several years and follows a rigorous evaluation process,” VHM chief executive officer (CEO) Ron Douglas said. “It is a momentous outcome for all parties involved.
“On behalf of the VHM board I wish to thank the Hon. Sonya Kilkenny and other key decision-making authorities involved in the outcome of the Goschen EES assessment … I am looking forward to progressing the project through its next stages to FID, development and ultimate production.”
