GAC Motor Philippines made a definitive statement about its electric vehicle ambitions at the 13th Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit, unveiling three distinct models that span premium, family, and youth segments in a clear portfolio strategy aimed at multiple market demographics.

HYPTEC HT: Premium performance with dramatic flair

The star of GAC’s PEVS 2025 showcase was undoubtedly the HYPTEC HT, a fully electric SUV that commands attention with its rear gull-wing doors, clearly inspired by the Tesla Model X, but who is paying attention? Priced at P2.26 million ($38,600), the HYPTEC HT positions GAC firmly in premium territory, competing directly with established luxury electric SUVs.

Built with what GAC advertises as “submarine-grade” steel, the HYPTEC HT delivers impressive performance credentials: 335 horsepower, 430 Nm of torque, and a 0–100 km/h sprint time of just 5.8 seconds. The vehicle’s 800V architecture enables rapid charging, with 10–70% battery replenishment achievable in just 15 minutes at compatible DC fast chargers.

The interior emphasizes luxury, with Nappa leather upholstery, genuine wood trim (I wonder if actual trees were felled), and a 14.6-inch HD infotainment display powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8155 chip. Reclining rear seats and a 22-piece Dolby Atmos sound system underscore the HYPTEC HT’s positioning as a premium electric SUV designed for executives and discerning buyers.

The gull-wing doors, which open over 2.3 meters high while requiring only 34 centimeters of side clearance thanks to integrated sensors, represent the vehicle’s dramatic design language. I can only guess that is in consideration for buyers with parking garage clearances in Metro Manila’s urban environment.

AION V: The family EV value proposition

Positioned as GAC’s volume play for the Philippine market, the AION V delivers practical electric mobility at a more accessible P1.498 million ($25,600) price point. This fully electric SUV targets Filipino families seeking to transition to electric vehicles without premium pricing.

The AION V offers a claimed 520 kilometers of driving range (CLTC standard) from its 75.26 kWh Magazine Battery 2.0, which incorporates GAC’s proprietary fireproof battery technology. DC fast charging capability enables 30–80% battery replenishment in 16–20 minutes, addressing range anxiety concerns for daily commuters and weekend travelers.

Interior features include practical amenities such as a built-in refrigerator and massage seats, along with spacious cabin dimensions designed for family use. The AION V represents GAC’s understanding of the Philippine family vehicle market, where practicality, space, and value proposition are key purchasing factors.

AION UT: Targeting younger buyers

Rounding out GAC’s three-vehicle PEVS launch was the AION UT, specifically positioned to attract younger, first-time EV buyers with contemporary styling and a more accessible price point. The UT arrives in the Philippines following a successful Thailand launch, where GAC reports approximately 1,000 units were sold within the first month of availability.

The AION UT’s design language skews toward a younger demographic, with styling choices that prioritize modern aesthetics and digital connectivity features appealing to tech-savvy buyers entering the EV market for the first time.

GAC is also offering an exclusive launch privilege package designed to address common barriers to EV adoption. For a ₱999 ($17 USD) sign-up fee, early buyers receive nearly ₱100,000 ($1,700 USD) in value:

The inclusion of a home charging solution—which typically costs ₱50,000–80,000 ($850–1,360 USD) when purchased separately—represents a significant value addition that directly addresses charging infrastructure concerns. The three-year registration and insurance coverage removes administrative friction from the EV ownership experience.

Strategic market entry

GAC’s three-vehicle launch strategy demonstrates a comprehensive approach to the Philippine EV market rather than reliance on a single model. The HYPTEC HT generates brand awareness and establishes premium credentials, the AION V targets the high-volume family segment with practical value proposition, and the AION UT pursues younger buyers entering the electric vehicle market.

A small backgrounder of GAC Motors: the Chinese state-owned manufacturer has extensive research and development capabilities, operating global design studios in Guangzhou, Shanghai, Los Angeles, and Milan. The company maintains long-standing joint venture partnerships with Toyota and Honda in China, and has developed proprietary electric vehicle platforms including the AEP 3.0 architecture that underpins its current EV lineup.

Strategic technology partnerships with Huawei for intelligent driving systems and CATL for battery technology support GAC’s electric vehicle development. The Magazine Battery 2.0 technology featured in GAC’s EVs incorporates what the company describes as advanced fireproof safety features.

Astara Philippines’ is the exclusive distributor of Chinese brands GAC Motor, JMC, and JAC Motors as well as Peugeot vehicles.
