Fosterville makes a splash in Bendigo

Agnico Eagle’s Fosterville gold mine has partnered with Swimming Bendigo in a bid to strengthen competitive swimming in Victoria.

Under the three-year partnership, the Swimming Bendigo Super Series will be renamed to the Fosterville Gold Swimming Super Series.

The Fosterville gold mine will also contribute $20,000 over the next three years to increase participation in competitive swimming at the grassroots level through events and community development in greater Bendigo.

“We are delighted to support Swimming Bendigo and contribute to the growth of grassroots swimming in the region,” Fosterville gold mine community officer Leigh Byrne said.

“This partnership aligns with our commitment to community development and fostering local talent.”

Swimming Bendigo is a collaboration between Bendigo Hawks Aquatic, Bendigo East and Kangaroo Flat swimming clubs.

Bendigo Hawks president Adam Webb described the new partnership between Fosterville and Swimming Bendigo as “significant”.

“The support from Fosterville will enable us to enhance our programs and provide more opportunities for young swimmers in greater Bendigo,” Webb said. “We look forward to a successful collaboration over the next three years.”

The Fosterville Gold Swimming Super Series will commence on May 25 at the Gurri Wanyarra wellbeing centre. The event will include two additional rounds in June and July.

The series is a precursor to the 2025 Victorian Short Course Country Championships, which will be held in Bendigo from August 9–10.

Located 20km from Bendigo, Fosterville is the largest gold producer in Victoria. At the end of 2023, the operation had mined over 4.2 million ounces of gold since beginning operations in 2005. Its mine life ends in 2033.
