FLANDERS says it has entered into an agreement with BMA for the conversion of an existing dragline into an AC-drive system, marking a major milestone in both companies’ ongoing commitment to advancing mining operations.
This AC conversion marks FLANDERS’ 11th conversion of this kind globally, and its fourth in Australia, further solidifying the company’s position as a leader in cutting-edge mining technology solutions, it says.
BMA, owned by BHP and Mitsubishi Development Pty Ltd, is one of the largest producers of metallurgical coal. It produces high-quality and cost competitive metallurgical coal at its five operating mines in Australia, together with a rail network and port terminal.
FLANDERS said: “Through this collaboration, we will bring our expertise in AC technology to convert the dragline, ensuring a host of improvements that will drive higher safety, performance, and efficiency in BMA Coal’s mining operations.”
Key benefits of the AC dragline conversion that FLANDERS highlighted include:
- Enhanced safety: This machine upgrade includes the reduction of arc flash hazards through a zero arc flash rating, significantly minimising the risk of electrical burns and fires. Additionally, advanced systems are integrated to control and reduce airborne dust, improving air quality and reducing health risks. The conversion also eliminates rotating equipment, which are common sources of mechanical injuries, further protecting workers from entanglement and flashovers;
- Increased productivity: With the implementation of advanced control systems and improved motor and drive technology, the dragline will operate more effectively, ultimately improving operational efficiency and helping BMA Coal meet its production goals; and
- Improved utilisation: By increasing the dragline’s uptime and operational capacity, the conversion will reduce the need for frequent maintenance activities. This leads to fewer disruptions in production and ensures that the dragline operates at peak performance for a longer period, helping BMA Coal get more value from its equipment over time.
FLANDERS concluded: “This AC conversion represents an exciting step forward in BMA Coal’s continued efforts to modernize its mining equipment, ensuring its fleet operates at the highest possible standards. We are confident that the success of this project will drive even greater improvements across BMA Coal’s operations in Australia and globally.”
