BeamWell and Benzina Zero recently announced the integration of the BeamWell™ water desalination and delivery platform with Benzina Zero’s Duo e-moped. “The BeamWell™ system, a transportable water desalination and delivery platform designed to provide clean water and renewable electricity in crisis zones and remote areas, includes four Benzina Zero Duo mopeds to transport clean drinking water and supplies to war zones and disaster regions that are generally cut off from access to life-sustaining clean water sources.
In a phone interview with Benzina Zero’s Chief Plugger-Inner and co-CEO Ben Silver, the news was shared exclusively with CleanTechnica that the first unit was en route to Gaza, via Jordan. The unit is being assessed in Jordan prior to deployment to aid the citizens of Gaza. Jordan is an important staging post in the Middle East as it hosts the United Nations, and many NGOs are tasked with providing crisis support in this unstable region. The BeamWell comes with a range of battery sizes — 20, 30, and 40 kWh. Despite comments from detractors, Ben believes that the BeamWell is more than capable of charging the electric scooters and pumping the water necessary to fulfill its duties in crisis areas.
The vision of both companies is that the BeamWell becomes a hub for the provision of energy, water, and a drop point for aid. The provision of four Benzina Zero Duo electric scooters will add mobility for the distribution of that aid. People can drink fresh water, charge phones, cook, and support each other. The BeamWell is deployed on a body of water, powers up, and then pumps up the water, filters, and desalinates it. Each BeamWell is equipped with a storage tank of 3000L, solar panels, and a wind turbine. In the future, Benzina expects to supplement the duo with a BZ hauler. This will be a multipurpose cargo e-bike with fat tyres.
The BeamWell can be rapidly deployed, even in a one-person operation — see the video here. The BeamWell is being made in Serbia and the US. The Duo produced in Italy is shipped to Serbia for integration. CleanTechnica has published on the Duo here.
Through their partnership, Benzina Zero will be able to distribute Beam Global products throughout Australia and Italy. This includes their portable battery storage systems and solar panels. Their modular nature means they have many flexible uses. “You can charge your car or e-bike anywhere you can generate solar.” Benzina Zero will shortly introduce a fat tyre hauler bike. It will have lower barriers to operation — not requiring registration or a licence — and be a more affordable product. Ben expects it to have a wide appeal. It might join the Duo on a BeamWell in the near future.
As Australia begins its bushfire season, Ben and I spoke of the powerful difference a BeamWell equipped with Duo’s could made in a community in crisis. He tells me he is “Pursuing known opportunities to work with government agencies tasked with providing relief.” He reminded me that it was not just bushfires, but also cyclones and floods where the BeamWell could make a significant difference as essential disaster relief equipment. Australia has many remote communities that would benefit from this technology as a daily cost-effective energy and water supply. Our near neighbours in the Pacific might also consider the device, rather than relying on expensive, imported diesel.
Ben said, “the combination of products creates an all-in-one solution for sustainable transport and resource access.” He expects that Australia’s remote indigenous communities will benefit, as will tourist operators taking people on Outback tours to the “never never.” It is another step in the fight to address ongoing environmental challenges.
Beam Global is a clean technology innovator headquartered in San Diego, California, with facilities in Chicago and Europe. They believe every person deserves access to safe, clean, reliable transportation. Beam products are also in use in South America and Africa. Now we can soon add Australia and the Middle East.
In the recent joint press release, Benzina Zero Chief Battery Charger and co-CEO Joe D’Ercole said: “This is an important day for both Benzina Zero and Beam Global. We’ve agreed to open new sales channels internationally by featuring each other’s products in sales efforts which includes Beam Global bundling our e-mobility solutions with products BeamBike™ and BeamWell™. The other exciting aspect of the partnership is Beam Wall’s introduction to their existing customers and prospects globally, particularly in Africa and the Middle East where the need for highly resilient and sustainable mobility solutions is growing rapidly.”
“Benzina Zero’s deep understanding of local needs and strong presence in both Australia and Italy make them an ideal partner to bring our innovative charging solutions to a wider audience. We are already including their e-mobility solutions in several meaningful opportunities which we are advancing in Europe and Africa,” CEO of Beam Global Desmond Wheatley said.
“Together, we are creating sustainable solutions that empower essential services and open new possibilities in the most demanding environments. This collaboration underscores Beam Global’s commitment to exploring creative business opportunities and finding new ways to increase sales without added overhead costs.”
In 2023, according to Fortune Business Insights, the global electric bike and scooter market was valued at $61.3 billion. It is projected to grow from $69.6 billion in 2024 to $198.9 billion by 2032. Australia, situated on the doorstep, as it were, of the largest concentration of the two-wheeler market — South East Asia — has a geographic advantage in accessing this burgeoning market.
The rising consumer demand coupled with the tightening of municipal regulations in Europe have meant that the sales of e-bikes have already surpassed traditional pedal bikes. Advancements in battery technology, increasing environmental awareness, and infrastructure development have also contributed to demand.
Each evening, we watch the international news displaying one country’s willingness to inflict conflict and pain on another. The actors change, but the scenario remains the same. Many innocents suffer. Hopefully the BeamWell collaboration with Benzina Zero will ease some of the suffering, and allow people to build a better future.
