T&E and other organizations release a joint statement calling on the European Parliament to preserve the recycled content targets for plastics in new cars proposed by the Commission
T&E, the European Waste Management Association (FEAD), the European Recycling Industries Confederation (EuRIC), Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE), the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) and the Environmental Coalition on Standards (ECOS) are concerned by the weakening of the recycled content targets for plastics in new cars that have been introduced in the European Parliament’s draft report.
Weakening the targets would slow the progress of the automotive industry toward becoming truly circular. Upholding the targets proposed by the Commission will ensure that valuable materials are recovered, thus reducing Europe’s dependence on imported raw materials
Similarly, diluting the target by including bioplastics and pre-consumer waste to count toward achieving the target will shift the focus away from post-consumer waste and create a false perception of progress while failing to increase plastics circularity.
