75% of hospitality food waste avoidable Food waste related to individual consumption is a huge problem, posing economic and environmental costs such as soil degradation and biodiversity loss while threatening global food security. Studies have shown that about 75% of food waste in the hospitality industry is avoidable, so there is huge potential to address the problem. So what is to be done?

A new study co-authored by Lucia Reisch, El-Erian Professor of Behavioural Economics and Policy at Cambridge Judge Business School, finds that a message to diners about the salience of cutting food waste at a restaurant reduced the leaving of food waste by 16 percentage points compared to a control group in which 41% left food waste.

The research found no significant effect on food waste from a second message that also informed diners about portion sizes and asking them to reflect on their hunger levels, though the authors say that exploratory findings indicate that this may have resulted in the ordering of fewer dishes.

Brazil seeks $6.2 billion from oil industry Brazil’s energy ministry has proposed measures to raise around 35 billion reais ($6.2 billion) from the oil industry over the next two years to help the government meet its fiscal targets.

On Monday, Mines and Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira presented measures to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva that include selling oil exploration licenses and a review of the reference prices used to calculate oil taxes, the ministry said in a message. If approved, it would be an alternative to a controversial increase in tax rates on some financial transactions. The ministry is pushing for the country’s oil regulator, known as the ANP, to review the reference prices used to calculate taxes paid by oil producers, including state-controlled Petrobras, before the end of July.

The oil and gas measures include a bill to authorize the federal government to sell oil production rights in areas of the pre-salt, Brazil’s most prolific offshore oil region, that haven’t been licensed yet. It would include areas near the giant Tupi, Mero and Atapu fields, and could raise 15 billion reais this year if approved by Congress.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks wins GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title with eActros 600 Mercedes-Benz Trucks today set a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title with its battery-electric long-haul eActros 600 truck including a semitrailer. Having reversed 124.7 kilometers means the manufacturer beat the previous world record in continuously reversing with a truck by around 36 kilometers. The former world record of some 89 kilometers had been set in the USA in 2020 in a diesel truck. The record-breaking trip in reverse was held on Motorsport Arena Oschersleben racetrack in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany; it took around 6 hours and 22 minutes, which translates into an average speed of 20 kilometers per hour. With its 14 tight bends designed for cars, the circuit is extremely demanding – but nevertheless offered fewer unpredictable risks of having to stop and thus interrupt the record attempt than public roads.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks wins GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title with eActros 600

Independently of the world record, Mercedes-Benz Trucks intends to travel another 30 kilometers or so this evening on public roads with the eActros 600 in reverse. The finishing line is at the Daimler Truck Global Parts Center in Halberstadt, also in Saxony-Anhalt. The new location will officially open on July 10th. Starting this year, it will gradually take on worldwide deliveries of spare parts for Mercedes-Benz Trucks. Mercedes-Benz Trucks wants to use the journeys in reverse to draw attention to topics of relevance to the transportation sector and society at large: Electrification, road safety and truck driver image.

Daimler Truck, DHL and hylane form partnership for fully electric trucks Daimler Truck, logistics provider DHL Group and commercial vehicle rental provider hylane GmbH today signed a cooperation agreement in the field of fully electric trucks at the “transport logistic” trade fair in Munich. The partnership stipulates that DHL will obtain 30 electric trucks of the type Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 through hylane’s “Transport as a Service model.” This means DHL will not purchase the vehicles; instead, hylane will bill DHL based on the actual kilometers driven. The electric trucks are set to be used in the Post & Parcel Germany division for transport between parcel centers. The trucks are expected to be delivered by the end of the second quarter of 2026. For hylane, the addition of 30 eActros 600 trucks marks a targeted expansion of its existing portfolio, which has so far focused on fuel cell electric trucks. For the three partners, this also represents the largest contract for electric trucks in Germany this year.
