Following Tesla’s release of delivery data for Q3 2024, we can now update Tesla’s cumulative sales, cumulative sales of the Model Y and Model 3 combined, and estimated cumulative sales of the Model Y and Model 3 separately. Let’s dive in.

First off, we’ve got Tesla reaching 6,751,222 cumulative sales. That also means that sometime this quarter Tesla will reach 7 million cumulative sales. Quite a start! Looking back 15 years, who would have though Tesla would be here today?

Together, the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y have carried Tesla forward most of the way. They had 6,021,007 cumulative sales at the end of the third quarter (leaving about 750,000 for Tesla’s other models). Hence the headline for passing another million-unit landmark.

Those totals above are all based on Tesla’s official numbers. Now we get to the more complicated matter — estimating how many of those sales were actually Model 3 sales or Model Y sales.

Based on my estimates, the Tesla Model 3 reached 2,627,871 cumulative sales at the end of Q3 2024. It doesn’t seem like it’s on track to reach 3 million cumulative sales until sometime early next year. It’s slightly larger sibling, though, has seen much faster growth in the past few years and is now well beyond the Model 3.

Using the same scale as I used for the Model 3 chart, you can see a very different shape to this Model Y chart. Despite being introduced two years later, the Model Y has now risen to 3,393,136 cumulative sales based on my estimates. It passed the 3 million unit milestone in the second quarter. It could well slide past 4 million cumulative sales by the end of Q1 2025. We’ll see.

Any other takeaways from these numbers? Any other number fun you’d like to see for Tesla sales?
