Collaborating for prosperity in the Pilbara

BHP and the Port Hedland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHCCI) have teamed up with the aim to drive economic growth, sustainability and community development in WA’s Port Hedland region.

BHP will invest $2 million with the PHCCI over three years, with a focus on driving diversity of suppliers, attracting businesses to the region, increase job creation and workforce readiness.

The BHP–PHCCI partnership was announced at the Business Excellence Awards in Port Hedland on Saturday night.

BHP general manager Western Australia Iron Ore Cindy Dunham said that, as a longstanding partner with the PHCCI, the major miner is delighted to help create a local environment in which businesses can thrive.

“Our operations are an integral part of the community, and we are proud to support local economic outcomes that contribute to the long-term sustainability of Port Hedland,” she said.

The PHCCI expects the new program to benefit entrepreneurs, small businesses, job seekers, residents and the industry. Chief executive officer Rebekah Worthington described the alliance as a key milestone in the PHCCI’s ongoing efforts to create a resilient and diverse business environment.

“It positions Port Hedland as a premier economic driver, not just within the north-west region and state economy, but as a significant contributor to the national economy,” she said. “It’s a testament to our commitment to fostering a thriving, empowered community.

“Together, we will create opportunities that ensure our local businesses continue to excel and drive economic growth.”

The local community can access PHCCI support from four hubs:

  • Tradie hub – offers workspace, training and networking events
  • Web business hub – offers co-working spaces and programs supporting local business in finance, management, training and technology.
  • Bungalow on Edgar – provides subsidised retail space for micro and small business
  • South Hedland hub – a promotes small business growth with workspaces, upskilling opportunities and support for entrepreneurs
