CASE STUDY – Innovative Access Solutions: Paradox Gives New Meaning to ‘The Road Less Travelled’ – Energy News for the Canadian Oil & Gas Industry | EnergyNow.ca

Picture yourself behind the wheel of a UTV descending a treacherously steep slope to access the main water source for drilling and completion operations. Gradually, you feel the weight of the machine sliding out of control, and suddenly, you’re off to the side, stuck in the mud. You were hoping that the current access mats would secure your path, but they’re obviously not up to this gravity-defying challenge. Frustrated, you climb out of the UTV, evaluate your options, and find there’s no better solution on the market.

One of Paradox Access Solutions’ top oil and gas clients recently brought this problem to the Paradox team, and boy, did they embrace the challenge! They didn’t just come up with a custom solution for the client’s situation but designed, manufactured, and produced an entirely new kind of access mat: the traction control mat.

The requirements: Paradox was entrusted with the daunting task of developing a customized access solution to enable the client to reach their primary water source, a site that proved inaccessible for several reasons. To address these challenges, the solution included:

  • Traction control that allows for slow, steady ascent and descent despite the steep slope
  • Safe foundation that supports safe passage for several different types of vehicles of varying widths
  • Reliable access that supports site visits all year round, regardless of the season and weather

The goal: Paradox’s mission was to work collaboratively with the client to conceptualize, design, engineer, manufacture, and install a customized solution that checked all the boxes:

  • Cost-effective
  • Durable
  • Sustainable

The client was incurring losses in the hundreds of thousands of dollars due to plant shutdowns caused by unreliable water access and safety concerns. This was no longer feasible, so timeliness was also paramount to mitigate future losses.
