After an intensive review process of several exceptional bids, including those from Cancun (Mexico), and Rome (Italy), the decision was made in favour of Calgary. The city’s proposal stood out not only due to its thoughtful planning but also because of the enormous potential for growth in the geothermal sector that the IGA recognizes in this region.

The IGA would like to extend its sincere gratitude to the bid teams from Cancun and Rome. Their professionalism, passion for the geothermal sector, and exceptional commitment throughout the bidding process were greatly appreciated. Both locations demonstrated considerable potential as future host cities.

The triennially held WGC is a coveted event for the global geothermal community, bringing together professionals worldwide to share knowledge, innovation, and best practices in geothermal energy.

Planning for WGC2026 in Calgary is set to commence immediately, with a formal handover slated to occur during the closing ceremony of the WGC2023 in Beijing, China.
