The European public transport sector is witnessing a profound shift, and at the heart of this transformation is BYD (Build Your Dreams), which has solidified its position as a dominant force in the continent’s electric bus market.

As BusWorld Europe 2025 in Brussels opens today at 10:00 am (GMT +2), the Chinese manufacturing giant stands ready to unveil the latest fruits of its relentless investment in battery technology and localized product development, cementing its role as a key driver of zero-emission mobility.

A decade of European commitment

BYD’s presence in Europe is not a recent development, but rather a strategic expansion built over a decade. The company made its first significant move in 2011, making an impression at the BusWorld exhibition as one of the first and only companies to display an all-electric bus. This investment was followed by the delivery of its first fleet of electric buses in the Netherlands in 2013, marking the successful completion of the first-ever public electric bus tender in Europe.

During CleanTechnica‘s visit to BYD’s Shenzhen headquarters, we asked Liu Xueliang, the General Manager of BYD Asia-Pacific’s Auto Sales Division, what the possibilities are for adopting BYD electric buses in the Philippines, and he replied that the latest bus technologies will be seen at BusWorld 2025. These new platforms, we found out, came as a result of the company’s sustained efforts, which have recently culminated in a surge in market adoption.

In the first half of 2025 alone, BYD registered strong growth, with its market share in the European electric bus segment rising significantly. This dedication to the market was underscored in September 2025 with the milestone delivery of the company’s 5,000th electric bus in Europe. Reflecting on this achievement, Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD, articulated the company’s long-term vision: “The delivery of our 5,000th electric bus in Europe reflects BYD’s long-term commitment to the European market and our unwavering efforts to transform public transportation.”

The strategic expansion extends beyond sales. To better serve the continent, BYD began manufacturing electric buses at its plant in Komárom, Hungary, in 2017, and has since announced a massive investment to more than double the facility’s annual production capacity to over 1,000 vehicles, complementing the company’s broader localization strategy.

From Blade to solid-state

BYD’s rise is intrinsically linked to its technological vertical integration, particularly in battery production. The company’s in-house development of cutting-edge power sources allows it to continually push the boundaries of range and safety.

At the core of its current fleet is the revolutionary Blade Battery Chassis, which integrates lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cells directly into the vehicle’s structure. This design enhances energy density and safety while enabling a lower center of gravity, leading to improved vehicle handling and greater range. This technology is instrumental in new models, such as the recently launched B13.b intercity bus, which boasts a substantial 560 kWh battery pack capable of a reported 700 km range — a crucial feature as the company targets the demanding intercity and regional segments.

Looking to the future, BYD will offer a tantalizing glimpse of its next technological leap at BusWorld 2025: the European debut of a new electric city bus featuring solid-state battery technology. While full commercial deployment remains ahead, this demonstration underscores the manufacturer’s dedication to eliminating “range anxiety” by showcasing a technology designed for further increases in energy density and exceptional thermal stability.

Expanding the product portfolio

BusWorld Europe 2025 serves as the key platform for BYD to showcase its versatile product portfolio tailored for European operators. The company will use its exhibition space to display a range of new vehicles, including models recently shortlisted for the Sustainable Bus Awards 2026.

On display will be the BYD B18.b, an articulated electric bus designed for high-capacity urban routes, and the BYD 12.b HF, a 12-meter high-floor bus, which demonstrates BYD’s ability to offer specialized body configurations for different operational needs. The much-anticipated unveiling of the new city bus with solid-state battery technology will dominate the press day, which includes a dedicated press conference on the opening Saturday.

With a strong push into high-range intercity vehicles and a continuous evolution of its core battery science, BYD is positioning itself not just as a supplier of electric buses, but as an indispensable partner in Europe’s transition to sustainable public transportation. As BYD continues to increase its presence in Europe, the company remains focused on innovation, localization, and collaboration with transit operators to build a cleaner, more sustainable future for the continent.
