BYD’s huge growth in 2024, as I wrote just two days ago, was one of the stories of the year. Now we have BYD’s December and full-year 2024 sales in, and they’re good.
In December, BYD’s plugin vehicle sales were up 60%! Across the full year, they were up 41.3%. In volume terms, BYD’s sales were up by 173,766 units in December 2024 compared to December 2023, and were up by 1,241,968 units across 2024 as a whole. Here’s a visualization of monthly BYD sales over the past two years:
Plugin hybrid sales accounted for much of the growth, rising 102% in December compared to December 2023. Across the full year, they were up 73%. In volume terms, they were up by 152,282 sales in December year over year (YoY) and were up by 1,047,294 sales in 2024 compared to 2023.
As for full electric cars, December sales were up by 9%. They were up by 12% across the full year. In volume terms, they were up by 16,980 sales in December YoY and up by 190,170 sales in 2024 YoY.
That is a solid year of growth, and considering the already very high starting point, it’s a truly impressive rise in sales in percentage terms as well as volume terms. When you compare it to Tesla’s annual sales actually decreasing in 2024, it stands out as an even bigger accomplishment. And, as I wrote two days ago, BYD was the 2nd largest auto seller in the world in November! I presume it was in December as well. BYD is conquering the auto industry. Can it continue with this tremendous growth in 2025?
