Bureau Veritas expands in Chilean copper market with GeoAssay acquisition

Bureau Veritas, a testing, inspection and certification services provider, has announced the acquisition of GeoAssay, a specialist in copper analysis.

This strategic move enhances Bureau Veritas’ service offerings in the copper industry, a critical mineral for the energy transition.

It reinforces the company’s status as the “market leader” in the metals and minerals sector in Chile, the top copper-producing nation globally.

The acquisition adds GeoAssay’s suite of capabilities including mechanical preparation and mineral samples analysis to Bureau Veritas’ portfolio.

With three advanced laboratories in Chile, GeoAssay’s fully automated facilities bolster Bureau Veritas’ regional footprint and customer proximity.

Bureau Veritas CEO Hinda Gharbi said: “This acquisition positions Bureau Veritas at the forefront of mineral testing activities in this essential copper market of Chile. This is fully aligned with our LEAP | 28 strategy.

“The integration of GeoAssay’s state-of-the-art laboratories allows us to immediately meet growing customer demands in Latin America. Our clients will benefit from faster and more accurate results, further strengthening our position in this market. I would like to welcome our new colleagues to Bureau Veritas.”

The acquisition means Bureau Veritas can offer improved services to current clients and appeal to new customers seeking precision, high accuracy, full traceability and quick turnaround times for mineral analysis.

GeoAssay’s team of 264 technical employees, with expertise in robotics, automation and the mining industry, will be instrumental in delivering these enhanced services.

GeoAssay CEO Feliciano Herrerasaid: “Our investments since 2017 are now bearing fruit and I am confident that our laboratory testing activities will reach new heights by leveraging Bureau Veritas’ expertise and scale. Beyond our cutting-edge industrial facilities, the expertise of our 264 employees will bring indisputable added value to Bureau Veritas’ extensive customer portfolio.”

Bureau Veritas’ metals and minerals operations are focused on supporting clients across the entire mining cycle, from mine to port.

The company’s extensive network of laboratories is equipped to accurately determine the physical, chemical and geochemical properties of materials, ensuring comprehensive support for the mining sector.

Last month, Copper mines in Chile resumed operations after a major power outage that affected the country’s power grid.
